It was a brilliant, sunny day in Washington, DC, when Amy received a call from CTC/SO summoning her into work. “Mike’s missing,” she was told as she walked into the office. Cofer Black and Hank Crumpton were there, and everyone was scrambling to clarify what was happening at the fort. Escorted into a side room, Amy found herself talking to George Tenet. The CIA director looked unkempt in a T-shirt, jeans, and flip-flops, his hair disheveled. “We need to get the news to Shannon before she sees this on TV,” he told Amy.

Tenet was livid when the Pentagon confirmed at a press conference that none of its personnel was dead or missing, signaling to every CIA family that an Agency man was down. “Why the fuck did they just say that?” the CIA director exclaimed. Black ordered: “I want the next of kin of every CIA officer in Afghanistan contacted within 15 minutes and told their son or husband is alive.” Amy tried without success to book a flight to California. It was Thanksgiving weekend and everything was full. Tenet cursed, wondering whether the casualty-notification team might have to be delayed until the next day. Amy looked at him and asked, “You’re the director of the CIA and you’re telling me you can’t get a plane?” Within an hour, Amy and two colleagues were boarding a twin-propeller US government aircraft at Dulles airport.
