Chapter 11

Kit and I take the bus home for half-term. I need some space from Danny, and the holiday is a good excuse to get away. Also, there’s not much to do in town without Spike and I don’t want to leave Kit on her own in Drimshanra. It’s been a while, but we used to take the Drimshanra bus together every Friday after I moved to Saint Catherine’s.

That’s how Kit and I got talking, though she was shy and awkward at first, and it seemed like we’d nothing in common. But it turned out there was a butterfly just itching to get out of that ugly shell, and Spike and I were only too happy to help, which is why Mrs Lawless thinks I’m a bad influence. She couldn’t see that Kit was dying to change. All she needed were the right conditions.

Mrs Lawless is waiting at the bus stop. She’s not pleased to see me.

“Do you need a lift, Felice?”

“No thanks, it’s fine. I’m meeting Dad in the shop.”

“In the shop?”

I don’t know why she’s so surprised. I mean, yeah, Dad doesn’t often go into the Drimshanra branch of More Video 4U, but it is his shop and there are occasions when he needs to be present. As he loves to remind me, a business doesn’t look after itself!

“Well, please tell him he’s been very good about Kit and the house in Rathmines. We appreciate it.”

“Sure!” Now I’m really confused. Like, I have to share the house with somebody and Kit’s the obvious choice, so what’s the big deal? It’s not even like the rent is that cheap. I pull up my hoodie and put my head down, but I can still feel Mrs Lawless gaze on the back of my neck as I leave the bus station. I could have asked her to drop me at the shop, but I’m dying for a cigarette after the stuffy bus, and the walk will clear my head.

In the dark October night, Drimshanra is silent and at peace. Reflections of the lights twinkle on the river and my home town is almost beautiful as I cross the bridge and head up towards Main Street, where Dad opened his first More Video 4U. Drimshanra is suspicious of strangers. There is an unmistakeable edge of hostility that cuts through the air here but, even if it doesn’t exactly embrace them, the town recognises its own.

Kit and Spike have only ever wanted to get out of here as fast as they can and as far away as possible. They’ve always assumed I felt the same way, that my spiritual home is London, because that’s where I get all my cool edgy stuff. But London is too big and anonymous. Nobody ever really sees you in the city, no matter how much you try to stand out. In Drimshanra, everyone knows who I am, Axel Carr’s wild, out-of-control daughter. I love that and I love Drimshanra in a way that would horrify Kit and Spike.
