CHAPTER THREE

Grady stared at his phone, wondering how in the world everything had gone to hell so fast. Four days had come and gone, and he still hadn’t seen Paul again. Of course, it wasn’t Paul’s fault or his fault really, just timing. He debated calling Paul and asking if he could see him tonight. Yesterday he’d phoned Paul but hadn’t heard back. Being clingy wasn’t cool, but he really wanted to spend some time with the guy.

Grady slid his phone into his pocket, trying to ignore the device. He stepped out of the station and headed to his truck, not really paying attention. When he was about ten feet from his truck, he realized someone was leaning against it. Grady glanced up and saw Paul’s smiling face. Grady stopped walking, wondering for a second if he was imagining the guy. He’d picked up an extra shift and had very little sleep. His brain wasn’t functioning at top speed, and he could be making things up to satisfy his need for the man.

“Hey sexy, I was wondering if you’d like me to cook you some breakfast?”

His heart filled with so much emotion it was almost painful. “It’s good to see you.”

Paul pushed away from the car and came closer. “I missed you.”

“I called.”

“I figured you would. My phone was knocked into a pot of water. I haven’t had time to get a new one. I should have told you to come by the restaurant if you couldn’t get me.”

“I didn’t want to intrude.”

“We haven’t known each other for long, so I’m going to tell you now, and I’m serious about this. If you ever need me, or if you can’t get me on the phone, stop by the restaurant. Everyone knows that I’m dating you.”

Grady felt like a balloon popped in his chest. He blew out a breath and couldn’t stop the smile from showing on his lips. “I was worried you didn’t want to anymore.”

“I’m really sorry. When I’m working, I’m a bit overly focused. I know better than to have my phone in the kitchen, but I wanted to hear from you. I was careless and knocked it in. So, what have you been up to?”

“Working. I’m off for the next four days. What does your work schedule look like?”

“I’m off tonight and tomorrow night. I have Madeleine today after school,” Paul said.

“Oh.”

“I’d like you to meet her. Of course we’ll both have to be flexible just in case she freaks out about me having someone. I know she said she wanted me to have a boyfriend, but she’s never seen me with someone.”

“Really?” Grady almost couldn’t believe that Paul hadn’t brought anyone home to meet his daughter.

“Last time I brought a guy around, she was too young to remember. I’ve had other guys I dated, but they weren’t the type to bring home and meet my daughter, so she really has never seen me with a guy, at least not that she’d remember.”

“I’d like to meet her.”

“Good. I can cook you breakfast while you shower, then you can sleep until it’s time to meet her.
