CHAPTER THREE
Grady stared at his phone, wondering how in the world everything had gone to hell so fast. Four days had come and gone, and he still hadnât seen Paul again. Of course, it wasnât Paulâs fault or his fault really, just timing. He debated calling Paul and asking if he could see him tonight. Yesterday heâd phoned Paul but hadnât heard back. Being clingy wasnât cool, but he really wanted to spend some time with the guy.
Grady slid his phone into his pocket, trying to ignore the device. He stepped out of the station and headed to his truck, not really paying attention. When he was about ten feet from his truck, he realized someone was leaning against it. Grady glanced up and saw Paulâs smiling face. Grady stopped walking, wondering for a second if he was imagining the guy. Heâd picked up an extra shift and had very little sleep. His brain wasnât functioning at top speed, and he could be making things up to satisfy his need for the man.
âHey sexy, I was wondering if youâd like me to cook you some breakfast?â
His heart filled with so much emotion it was almost painful. âItâs good to see you.â
Paul pushed away from the car and came closer. âI missed you.â
âI called.â
âI figured you would. My phone was knocked into a pot of water. I havenât had time to get a new one. I should have told you to come by the restaurant if you couldnât get me.â
âI didnât want to intrude.â
âWe havenât known each other for long, so Iâm going to tell you now, and Iâm serious about this. If you ever need me, or if you canât get me on the phone, stop by the restaurant. Everyone knows that Iâm dating you.â
Grady felt like a balloon popped in his chest. He blew out a breath and couldnât stop the smile from showing on his lips. âI was worried you didnât want to anymore.â
âIâm really sorry. When Iâm working, Iâm a bit overly focused. I know better than to have my phone in the kitchen, but I wanted to hear from you. I was careless and knocked it in. So, what have you been up to?â
âWorking. Iâm off for the next four days. What does your work schedule look like?â
âIâm off tonight and tomorrow night. I have Madeleine today after school,â Paul said.
âOh.â
âIâd like you to meet her. Of course weâll both have to be flexible just in case she freaks out about me having someone. I know she said she wanted me to have a boyfriend, but sheâs never seen me with someone.â
âReally?â Grady almost couldnât believe that Paul hadnât brought anyone home to meet his daughter.
âLast time I brought a guy around, she was too young to remember. Iâve had other guys I dated, but they werenât the type to bring home and meet my daughter, so she really has never seen me with a guy, at least not that sheâd remember.â
âIâd like to meet her.â
âGood. I can cook you breakfast while you shower, then you can sleep until itâs time to meet her.
