Chapter Twelve: Rules to Be Broken

Deverick

Dev sat on the bed as he waited for Xavier to answer. The use of telephones on Isle D’Asile was forbidden unless it was a dire emergency and only certain members had access. As far as Dev was concerned, this was absolutely urgent, and Xavier was one of the few with a device.

“You know you shouldn’t be calling.”

His commander’s calm voice almost made him feel better. Almost. He jumped up and started to pace. “I need help. The enforcer has shown himself and already attempted to kill her again.”

Xavier was quiet for a moment. “Tell me everything.”

Dev spoke as quickly as he could as he told the story. “She knows that I can shift and that she’s in danger. This guy is playing cat and mouse, and I don’t like her being the mouse and me being the entertainment.”

“Highly unusual,” Xavier offered. “Normally, they just seek out their victim and end it quickly. I’ll have to speak with Tokys. This situation is already much worse than we anticipated.”

“I can’t wait. You knew when I was here before that the danger was close by. I don’t know what the game is with this guy, but I can’t just wait for her to get hurt.”

“I understand, Deverick. I will speak with the Elders and get back to you.”

“I don’t have time to--” Dev started to respond when he heard her call to him. Felt her fear. And pain. He dropped the phone and ran back to the main building. I never should have left her.

The smell hit him as soon as he entered the front door. He followed it to the dining room and stopped. Mak crossed the room with Maci limp in his arms.

“You’re too late.”

Dev could hear her heartbeat. I still have a chance. “Put her down.”

“She’s coming with me. Where she goes, her father will follow. I’ll kill them both.”

“You’re not getting past me with her.” He shifted into dragon form. Tables and chairs flew in all directions as he knocked them out of his way with each step. Glass shattered when one of his wings broke out several windows. His long tail caused even more chaos with each move.

His size put him at a definite disadvantage indoors, but Mak had problems of his own. Enforcers weren’t necessarily known for their physical endurance. and with Maci in his arms, her weight threw him off balance, and he stumbled as he tried to exit the room.

Dev paused and waited for his opportunity. All I need is a clear shot at him. Just one.

Mak backed away from him and used Maci’s still form as a shield. He glanced over his shoulder when his back hit the wall. Dev stalked his every move and waited for the opening he needed.

The door leading outside couldn’t be opened unless the handle was turned. Mak slid along the wall but couldn’t hold on to Maci and still free a hand to twist the knob. He tried to balance her as he reached behind him, but her body slipped from his grasp.
