Fifty-three seconds into my karaoke song, Mensa sang the male vocals to ‘Bring Me to Life.’ It surprised me and thrilled me at the same time. I hadn’t sang with him since we were kids and he visited our church a couple times. I’d forgotten how great his voice happened to be.

When we finished, Sandy let out a piercing scream like she was at a rock concert.

“I had no idea you could sing like that,” Joules said as I made my way to the bar.

I glanced over my shoulder at Mensa, but he’d headed to a pool table. “Well, it’s not like there are too many opportunities for singing around here.”

“I didn’t know Mensa could fuckin’ sing,” Cynic said. “That settles it, he’s got ‘Open Mic’ duty from here on out.” Cynic glanced at his phone. “Shit. I didn’t realize the time. I gotta get over to Twisted Talons.” He aimed a look at me. “Finn said you’re staying the night here. Late tomorrow morning, I’m showing you how to wield a knife.”

I nodded, hoping I wouldn’t have to ever use a knife. The idea of cutting someone didn’t sit well with me, but I wanted to protect myself.

The distinct opening notes of Elle King’s ‘Where the Devil Don't Go’ filled the room and I whipped my head around to see Whitney holding the microphone. For all her talk earlier, she was wrong. Her voice wasn’t as raspy as Elle King’s, but Whitney could still belt out the lyrics.

From the corner of my eye, I caught Mensa staring at her. The look in his eyes confused me. As much as he wanted her out of the clubhouse, I almost thought he watched her with lust in his eyes… but it also looked like anger.

“Stop staring at your cousin,” Finn murmured in my ear.

I turned and our noses were almost touching. “I can’t help it. She’s really good, and the way he’s looking at her. I’m not sure if he wants to wring her neck or kiss her.”

Finn’s eyes heated. “Some people like to do both.”

My jaw dropped. “I am not thinking about my cousin that way, Finn!”

He laughed. “I love pushing your buttons.”

I pointed a finger at him. “That’s great, honey, but leave my cousin out of it.”

Roman sidled up to us. “Have you considered singing, professionally?”

With a smile, I shook my head. “I’m not good enough for that —”

“Stop it,” Finn said.

Roman nodded. “Listen to Finn. You are good enough to consider professional gigs.”

I opened my mouth to protest, but Finn gave my neck a gentle squeeze.

He stared at me for a beat. “I already hate the bastard for hitting you and shit, but my guess is he took this dream from you, too. Wish I’d have recorded you just now because, babe, you and Mensa could practically be an Evanescence tribute group – but I think you’re too good for that.”

I kept quiet and looked away from Finn.

Roman said, “He’s right. You should be singing at local events, the National Anthem, America the Beautiful, songs like that.
