Chapter 16

Cait knew they had to be getting close to Mexico—and Carlos—and understood she had little chance of surviving once that happened. She had to find a way to escape. They had been driving day and night, only stopping for food, gas, and to use the restroom. Most of the time she had a towel over her head, making it hard for her to tell from the sun what time of day it was or how much time had passed.

Today was no different, but she had listened to the steady cadence of the windshield wipers for hours. Now there was the additional sound of thunder and wind, and the anxious mutterings of the two men in the front seat as they talked about the severity of the weather.

Maria whimpered after a particularly loud burst of thunder, and even from beneath the towel, Caitlin saw the brilliant flash of lightning that followed. The storm had such a frightening violence to it, Cait feared it was an omen.

She had heard Maria ask for a restroom break more than an hour earlier, and they still had not stopped. Were they nearing the border? She began to squirm in her seat as if uncomfortable.

“What is wrong, señora?”

“I have to go to the bathroom.”

Maria spoke in Spanish to the men, but Cait could not make out their murmured response.

“Sí. Rest stop in two miles,” she finally heard Juan say in Spanish. That was followed by another whispered conversation in the front seat as if they were deciding how to handle letting her use the public restroom.

Cait’s mind raced. This could be her chance. She felt the van slowing as they exited the highway and blinked against the light as Maria pulled the towel from her eyes. She leaned close with a warning. “They will kill you if you try anything.” Maria’s eyes were full of concern. “They can deliver you dead or alive.” Cait nodded as Maria cut the ties from her wrists. “You must stay with me.”

Cait nodded again as the two men turned around and accentuated Maria’s words by showing her the blades of their knives. Juan went so far as to make a slicing motion at his neck to show her he meant business. She had no doubt they would kill her—even in a public place—if it meant protecting their boss. She had heard stories that involved crimes much worse than that—and local agencies, fearing for their lives, always turned a blind eye. No one ever faced charges for the crimes, even if there were numerous witnesses.

Maria exited the van first and waited for Cait to follow. A light rain was falling, but it felt wonderful, refreshing. Clean. Caitlin tried to appear meek and compliant as she walked beside Maria, but she lifted her head before entering, searching for the security cameras she knew must be in place. If anyone had a reason to look at them, she wanted to make sure they saw her face. She glanced back at the van and saw that the men were following closely behind.
