Although saṃsāra in all its variety is from the very beginning an illusion, through ignorance and clinging to self, beings are unaware that phenomena are false—appearing so clearly and yet devoid of real existence. And they doggedly believe in their real existence. So it is that they wander constantly in the city of saṃsāra, which is without beginning or end. And all these beings, who owing to their individual karmic destiny experience different hallucinatory appearances, are regarded by the noble ones as objects of compassion. This is why one should train on the relative level in compassion, the cause of one’s concern for beings in saṃsāra that is like a magical illusion. As it is said in the Sūtrālaṃkāra,
Their compassion touches sentient beings
Who burn with lust or fall into the power of their enemies….
Who are weighed down with heavy shackles
And are addicted to what poisons them….
Strengthless, wandering on mistaken paths.
