Belly, Ribs, Chest

This exercise is wholly inspired by a yoga breathing technique called the Full Yogic Breath. Sometimes it is referred to as the “Three Part Breath” (There’s 3 again…). It has the Sanskrit (the ancient language of what we now call India) name “Durga”, which means “complete”. Durga is also the name of the powerful Hindu goddess symbolizing power, will and determination. She is the destroyer of suffering and obstacles. So all in all it’s a breathing exercise with strong pedigree!

The point of this practice is to encourage a full and expansive breath that draws on our will and determination to achieve just that. The sense of fullness and the stretch in the body brings us right into the present moment, with the added benefit of using the power of the breath to move through whatever is blocking our energy at the time.

I’ve called this exercise Belly, Ribs, Chest as the labelling of each of these body parts is a key component. It helps drive our attention to the areas of the trunk that can receive the breath fully. The words also give the mind a focal point, and they form a phonetic rhythm for the whole practice.

Here’s how to do it:

Start with a conscious breath in and out.

Then direct your attention and your inhale into to your abdomen, saying in your mind “Belly” as you do this. Feel the belly swell as you do this.

Continue to breathe into your lungs, saying in your mind “Ribs” as you do this. Feel your lungs expand as you do this.

Continue to breathe into your collarbones, saying in your mind “Chest” as you do this. Feel your collarbones stretch as you do this.

Continue to breath until your trunk is full.

Then exhale all the way out, until you are empty of breath.

Take another full breath in and then out in one go without labelling parts of the body.

Then let the breath settle without you controlling it.

This is one round of Belly, Ribs, Chest.

Three rounds is an ideal amount to feel the benefit (3 is the magic number remember), breaking through blocks to your attention and serving you a bit of Durga power.
