Chapter Thirteen

“What were you doing when this happened?” The healer dragged her seat, so she sat closer to me. Her eyebrows came together as she stared at the bruises on my ribs, and a loud sigh escaped from her mouth. “Did you get into a fight?” Judging by the look on her face, I could tell she had heard about the eyebrow-incident.

“Something like that,” I said, not willing to share the truth of what happened. Enough people knew about that already, and I didn’t want to turn this into some big drama.

“My advice? Don’t get into more fights.” She dipped her fingers into a jar. The fingers came out drenched with a green, foul-smelling ointment. I recoiled as she reached for me, but once I saw the annoyance on her face, I held still.

“That’s good advice.” I smiled as her fingers touched my bruised skin, the ointment sending a pleasant coolness through my body. I had no idea what she was using, but it was working better than I could’ve expected. “I’ll try not to get into more fights.”

“Of course.” She didn’t sound convinced but, then again, it’s not like I needed to convince anyone. In fact, I hadn’t even wanted to visit the healer’s office. When Nikos suggested it, right after I woke up on his couch, I shot him down without batting an eyelid.

Then, when I finally reached the university, the soreness in my muscles became almost unbearable. I had no other choice but to admit I had lost that battle. So, I relented. Under Nikos’ watchful gaze, I hobbled my way here. Now I was happy that I’d done so. There was no way I’d be able to survive the day without some sort of pain relief.

“Looking good.” Nodding to herself, the healer gave my bruises an approving smile. “Try not to overexert yourself and you’ll be good. The bruises will start fading in a matter of days.”

“Thank you.”

I grabbed my bag and started walking toward the door. Before I reached it, I caught a glance of my reflection in the full-body mirror by the corner of the office. My hair was slightly disheveled, wild locks of hair jutting out from my ponytail. I wasn’t wearing my dirty clothes from the day before. Again, I had Nikos to thank for that.

I had been so dazed from the previous night’s assault that, after waking up, I was ready to go about my day in my old, dirty clothes. He wouldn’t have it, of course, and so we swung by Cora’s so I could change clothes. Thankfully, no one was home, and so I didn’t have to explain why in the world I had spent the night with an Oberon fae. Truth be told, I couldn’t even explain that one to myself.

It had seemed like a great idea last night, but today I wasn’t so sure. To wake up in Nikos’ house, wearing his clothes… yeah, it was a little too much for me. Things quickly became more awkward once Nikos waltzed into the living room, carrying a breakfast tray in his arms.
