Chapter Twelve

Karina was at Markarva’s, the business she, Ava, and Margo had started. It still looked as feminine and chic as it had the day, they opened it. Karina could hear the light hush of conversation going on in the cubicles. It was a sign that business was good, and this had been a great investment, even though all three women had had their doubts. Today she needed to be someplace which knew she had done something right.

The subtle classical tones soothed her in the office. The muted mauves and blues that they had decided to finally go with also gave her a sense of peace that she hadn't been able to find lately. As she slowly walked down the hall, she could feel the cushion under her feet from the carpet. It had been a great decision to use triple padding.

“Welcome to Markarva’s,” Ava said with a smile. “We solve problems and projects with a discreet feminine touch.”

Listening to Ava brought a smile to Karina’s face.

“The carpet? What do you think? Do you feel like you are walking on air? You know I got this idea from you, you know,” Ava said.

Karina gave her a look of disbelief.

“It’s true. When you told us there was an uptick in companies approving alternative therapies and one of them was reflexology, acupuncture, and acupressure, I took that and thought we could make it more comfortable for our customers if the floor gave their feet some relief.”

Karina shook her head. “I never would have made that connection but great job!”

Ava preened under the compliment then she stopped and looked at Karina.

“While I think it's always a good time to give me praise, I have a feeling you did not come here just to look at how good the carpet was.”

“I didn't come here for the carpet at all.” Once again, Karina took a look around the office and she sighed. “The problem is I don't know what I thought I was going to get out of coming to the office.”

“Well, if nothing else, you've got your best friend and one of the most beautifully decorated offices in all of Cooper’s Sand,” Ava said as she guided her to their private office to the side. When they were inside, Ava sat Karina on the couch and waited. Karina didn’t speak, and Ava smiled.

“If you think you can outwait me, I'm going to have to introduce you to Everett so he can tell you I have the patience of an elephant,” Ava said in a soft voice.

Karina looked at her friend and then at her hands.

“Today we're going to speak to Victoria's doctor together as a family,” Karina said.

“That's good, right? I mean, you all can get everything out in the open, and Victoria can get back on track.”

“I guess the problem is that we're going to do this as a family. In the beginning I thought that it was going to be the doctor would talk to me and then talk to Daniel, and we would be able to help Victoria.
