JADE

I wiped the sweat at my brow and stretched my back.

“You wanna do another couple of reps?” I asked Win as I bent to grab my water bottle. He stood next to me, and when I turned to look at him, I laughed at the look on his face.

“Girl, where do you find the energy?!” He grimaced. “Don’t tell Josh, or else he will make me do some extreme core strengthening, but damn! Trying to keep up with you already has my legs feeling like jelly.” I coughed, trying to bat away laughter.

Something I had found out very quickly was just how funny Winston was.

In the last couple of days, I not only got to know Josh but his best friend. Or brother, like they called one another. I’d kept searching while Josh and Win were at work during the week and confirmed what I’d known.

Joshua Packard was indeed Susan’s son.

I’d followed my gut and found out that Susan’s family from hell had paid someone to change the hospital where Josh was born on his birth certificate. I was glad I’d never me her family. Not only her parents but her older siblings as well. If I had, I’m pretty sure I would have killed them. None of them had protected her or her beautiful baby, who had grown up to become such an incredible man despite the adversity, trial, and tribulations that life had tossed his way.

I knew in my gut Susan would be proud of him.

If he ever tried to look for her, he hadn’t mentioned it. But he also would have never found her or a lead to go off of.

All because of her asshole family.

“Jade?” Win called my attention, snapping me out of my thoughts.

“I don’t work out that hard.” I snorted. Win just breathed in dramatically and exhaled the same way.

“How’s your case going?” he asked.

It was Friday night. An official week since bumping into Josh. He was at an open house one of his agents had scheduled but needed him to handle it because something came up.

“It’s done,” I shared honestly. I didn’t want to keep lying. I hated every time I did. But I swore it felt like anytime I tried to tell Josh the truth about who I was and my case, something came up.

A call.

An email.

A kiss he laid on me that made me forget myself.

“Yet you’re still here,” he noted, and I nodded.

Win and I had been working out together every day this week since he opened the door on Monday when I returned, and he just got home from work. He’d suggested it, and we had fallen into a routine. Usually, thirty minutes later, Josh would come home and join us. Then the three of us would work together in the kitchen to make dinner.

Seamlessly.

Like we’d been doing it forever instead of less than a week.

But this was the first time he’d asked about my case and my work. There was something about the way he was looking at me that had the hairs on the back on my neck rise.
