MA’AT

“One ‘brings into being’ Maat by the divine recitation of prayers in an unceasing effort where one listens to one another, where one acts one for the other. Thus social life and cosmic life intertwine: they are the reflection one of the other.”

HISTORY AND MYTHOLOGY

This Egyptian goddess had an awesome responsibility: she decided which souls ascended into the afterlife. To do this, she weighed a recently deceased person’s soul (some myths say the heart) in the underworld, called Duat, using a set of cosmic scales. The soul could only get into the higher realm if it was lighter than the feather of truth. Those who didn’t measure up became dinner for the lion deity Ammit. Thus, Ma’at became the ultimate arbiter of justice, order, morality, and balance. Her priests held positions within the judicial system and pharaohs proclaimed their allegiance to her (and the rules of law and order) by holding up a figurine of the goddess.

In her role as defender of order, Ma’at also kept the stars in place and controlled the cycle of the seasons. Her job included tending to the mortal realm, the natural world, and the entire cosmos. As such, she kept the universe from deteriorating into chaos.

Ma’at was one of the sun god Ra’s daughters and the wife of Thoth, god of wisdom. In some legends, Shu, god of the wind/air who wore feathers (symbols of the air element and the intellect) in his hair, was her brother.
