THE NEXT MORNING, HE’S up long before me. Somehow, he’s managed to make steak and eggs over the campfire.

“I don’t recall bringing a ribeye with me last night when I packed the cooler, Spencer.”

Shrugging, he hands me a plate and says, “You didn’t. I pilfered it from your kitchen.”

“You stole it from my kitchen?” I ask, trying to suppress the giggle that rises.

“I prefer my terminology. I didn’t steal it.”

“You do realize they mean the same thing?” I ask as he sits beside me on the floor.

“Yep. Mine just sounds better,” he says, biting a piece of steak.

“You’re a damned good cook, especially over campfire.”

“Had no choice. When my mom died, Dad made sure that Syd and I knew how to take care of the basics in case something happened to him. After a while, we began to take turns cooking.”

“How come I never knew that?”

“You know it wasn’t as easy for me to talk about my mom back then as it has become in these later years. Same with my dad.”

“Yeah, well, that was fresh.”

“And hers was no less painful.”

“I’m sorry,” I say, reaching out and touching his hand. “I didn’t mean to imply that—”

“No. It’s good. I know you didn’t. Sometimes, it just still seems fresh; like it just happened yesterday. When the pain is raw like that, I tend to be a little short. My bad.”

I nod and return to eating. We eat in silence for several minutes before he gets up and takes our plates to clean up.

“We need to get out there and see what’s happening.”

“I’m sure they’re erecting a Bailey bridge. They won’t allow this community to be down without access for too long.”

“Money.”

“Yeah, well, it does go a long way,” I say.

He nods again. I get up and begin getting dressed, and I’m surprised when I find him still standing in the mini kitchen in just his jeans and no shirt, socks, or shoes. His jeans hang at his hips, and he looks so delicious that I want to pull them down, pull his cock out, and suck the hell out of it.

Spencer lets me know that his mind isn’t on the same page as mine when he says, “P, what are we doing?”

“What do you mean?” I ask, turning away from him.

“I mean this thing between us, sleeping together, having sex, reminiscing about the past, and acting like today doesn’t exist.”

I sigh. “I’m sorry. I’ve been selfish and haven’t been considering your feelings just taking what I needed.”

“What do you want from me, Poppy?”

“Nothing. Everything. I don’t know, Spence. What are you asking me? I mean, I know that it sounds selfish, but I want everything that you have to give to me.”

“I’m giving you all that I have, P. Don’t have me out here on a fucking limb again, and you’re not coming out with me.”

“I’m trying, Spence.”

“Are you really, though? I want you, P, and you know this. It’s hard to get through to you when you’re like this.”

“Like what?”

“Waffling. You can’t make up your mind about shit, and I’m trying to make it easy for you.
