CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Samara

SAMARA STRETCHED OUT and sat in the bed for a few minutes debating her options. Jack was dead, and she could lead her parents away from the pack with some persuading but living with Devin seemed to be the best. And the only way she could make it succeed was becoming the one thing her parents hated- a werewolf. She snatched Devin’s phone before he woke up and texted Maria about her choice to make the change.

‘Oh, I’m so glad, brother. I’ll let Derrick know,’ Maria replied, and Samara didn’t correct her. Instead, she placed the phone back on the charger and crept downstairs to make breakfast. After searching the kitchen and getting acquainted with where things were, she quickly whipped up a small batch of pancakes. A set of feet echoed on the stairs when she turned off the stove. She turned with a pan of pancakes in her hands.

“Good morning.” She placed the pan on the table.

“Morning.” Devin smiled which made her heart squeeze. “You didn’t need to cook breakfast.”

“Look, this morning I gave it a lot of thought.” She squared her shoulders.

“Thought to what?” Devin’s body tensed up.

“About making the change.” She grabbed Devin’s hand. “I want you to change me after breakfast. I’m ready to let go of my awful family and be happy with you.”

“Are you sure about this?” Devin pursed his lips. Yes, she had another day to really think about it, but she didn’t want to wait. For months, she had waited to escape and her plans were now useless. Waiting and planning had done her no good.

“I’m sure. Let’s eat and then go on a run together.” Samara grabbed a plate and dished up the eggs, bacon, and pancakes.

“This looks amazing.” Devin filled up his plate and they ate in pleasant silence. Samara pulled out her phone and hit her mother’s contact information. The phone rang without anyone picking up, setting off warning bells in her head.

“That’s odd.” She looked at her phone and placed it down without talking. “She normally always answers my calls.” Samara nibbled on her lower lip.

“Your mother?” Devin asked, and she nodded. “She could be busy.” Devin glanced up at Samara and she wanted to know what he was thinking.

“Well, where do you want to do this?” Samara lifted her head and met his gaze.

“Let’s go outside so we don’t ruin any doors.” Devin chuckled at some inside joke.

“Yeah, I don’t want to do that.” Samara smiled. “Do you think my parents will come here?”

“I...” Devin paused. “Are you worried about it?”

“I don’t know if they bought it about Jack. The tone of my mother’s voice is making me uneasy.” Samara adjusted in her seat and glanced to the backyard. Something was off about the way her mother kept asking about the hunter. Even Douglas stopped messaging her after the call. Maybe he just got the hint finally.

“We can change you later when you’re ready for it. I have today and tomorrow off.” He wiggled in his seat, but she shook her head firmly.
