Nine

The van was quiet, aside from the cardboard rattling against the broken window. On my right, Sean had his hand on my knee, while behind me, Dwayne played with my hair. A satisfied glow emanated from the depths of my being. I’d finally been fucked last night, and the sex had fully and completely fulfilled everything I’d dreamed it would. The five alphas were sweet and affectionate to me now, in a way I hadn’t dared to hope.

And yet I couldn’t find a single word to say as we cruised along the highway. Somewhere inside me, underneath the blissed-out contentment, I was still very aware of where we were going – and of what was going to happen when we got there.

Surely the alphas’ affection for me would make them ease up on whatever they’d been planning to do to Hart… wouldn’t it? I wanted to believe that, but then I remembered Magnus talking about how Hart’s actions had consequences, and how I couldn’t take responsibility for that. When I thought about that, I had no doubt they’d be just as harsh on him as they’d planned to be from the start.

As if he’d noticed my mood, Sean squeezed my knee. “Look, Lilyanne. There’s a motorcycle out there.”

“Hmm… that’s nice.” I could feel his confusion at my unenthusiastic response. Just yesterday, I’d been pressing my face to the glass to get a better look at a motorcycle. I did appreciate his effort, so I gave him a break. “I’m not in the mood to look at bikes right now. Maybe if I was riding one.” I snorted.

“Why don’t we find some time for you two to rent a pair of bikes once we get to Creek Falls?” Dwayne suggested. “You can race your hearts out, and the rest of us will keep score.”

I chuckled, not wanting to point out there was no score to keep track of. “Once we get to Creek Falls, you’ll all be busy with other things.” I tried and failed to keep the bitterness out of my voice.

I had no right to feel angry toward them anymore. At this point, I was sleeping with the enemy. Hart would already be furious if he knew how things had gone, and there was no going back on that. I’d already betrayed him and my pack – I might as well accept that.

Something passed between the alphas, the atmosphere in the van changing tangibly. I was pretty sure I’d just witnessed the effect of one of their telepathic communications. “You could still have a fun motorcycle race,” Dwayne said. “We can stop and do it before we get there.”

“Yeah, right.” We’d pause on our way to a battle just so Sean and I could have a good time? I didn’t see how any of the men would be okay with that.

Then again, wasn’t that kind of what we’d done already? We must’ve heated up the sheets for about three hours last night, if not more. We’d gone at it for so long, we’d left the motel at noon today rather than eight like usual.
