Chapter Thirty-Three

Stellan woke hours later—or he assumed it was hours. The house was quiet, and his room was dark except for the light shining in underneath the crack of the door.

He blinked into the darkness. Why the hell was he awake at… He rolled over and tapped the screen of his phone with a soft groan. Three in the morning?

A murmur caught his attention, and he glanced toward the door. Had it been closed when he and Niles went to sleep?

He glanced over his shoulder to the empty, rumpled bed and his cheeks flushed. Hadn’t Oranges passed out beside him?

You know, after they’d dry humped each other like fucking teenagers.

His brows furrowed at the alpha’s absence, at the way it stung a little.

The murmur came again, and he frowned toward the door.

Fuck it. I’m nosy.

Stellan gingerly slid himself off the mattress and made his way across the room silently. He wasn’t used to the floors being so quiet, because in his own apartment he could hear every step he took. He remembered tracking Elise through the apartment in the mornings as the floor creaked with every move.

But now he slid silently to the door, listening closer.

The deep, dulcet tones of Niles reached through the wood, and Stellan pressed closer.

“—did you do?” Niles hissed, his voice more angry than Stellan had ever heard it.

He didn’t know Oranges had it in him to even get angry.

He was silent for another moment as he listened to the person on the other line.

“Fuck. Taylor.” Niles spat the name like it was a curse, and Stellan’s eyebrows rose a little higher. He was pissed. “Is she okay at least?”

Another pause, a heavy sigh, footsteps pacing outside the door.

“How did you—why—you know what, never mind. I need to process. Stay by your phone.”

Niles hung up without saying goodbye, and Stellan shifted to dart back to the bed, but a muttered curse and a whispered, “Please pick up,” piqued his curiosity.

“Hey,” Niles greeted gruffly. “I know it’s late, sorry to wake you. We have a situation.”

Stellan’s hand flexed against the wall, a pit opening up in his stomach. Was this going to be the dirt that got him out of the mess with Lucas? He wrapped his arms around his stomach as he listened in, feeling lower than low with each passing breath because he still had to go through with this bullshit even after…

Even after he could feel Niles’s lips on his skin. Even after—

“Taylor attacked an omega.”

Stellan’s mouth dropped open at Niles’s hissed confession. That was the last thing he expected to come out of the alpha’s mouth, and he snapped his mouth shut to form a frown.

“He’s been a problem child for a long time, but I never expected this from him.” Pause. “She’s in critical care, and I’ve sent someone down to collect her information. We’ll compensate her.”

Another pause. A hesitant sigh. “What should we do?”

Stellan held his breath. The price for attacking an omega was high. And since she was in critical
