Wren

My arms ache from the restraints holding them in place.

I draw in a breath and lift my heavy head. My eyes fight to open, but when they do, I wish they hadn’t after all.

Wes. Standing in the center of the room with chains around his wrists and ankles securing him to the concrete floor. His tired gaze meets mine, and it’s like a thousand knives take turns slicing through my heart.

Franny was right, death would be coming soon. And here I am, staring it in the face.

“Oh, good, you’re awake.” Parla approaches from the side, stopping a few feet away. She crosses her arms over her chest and juts out her hip. All attitude, all the time. She glares over her left shoulder and then nods toward me.

“Wait,” I call out, unsure what the fuck I plan on saying next. Maybe if I stall them enough, something will happen. Perhaps a fucking miracle from the universe.

She blinks at me, clearly annoyed with having uttered a single word. “What?”

I look at Wes, and back at her. “Why are you doing this?” I take note of the rest of the room I can make out without being too obvious. Rollo, the old man who showed me kindness is avoiding us all and fiddling with his magical devices. A guard stands behind him, and there are at least two more posted up by the door.

Parla taps her pointed shoe against the floor. “You wouldn’t understand.”

“Enlighten me.” Anything to prolong the inevitable while I run possible scenarios through my head. There has to be something we can do to get out of here. I gently tug at my wrists and grow weary of ever escaping the restraints. Wes seems impossibly bound, too, making this whole thing that much more difficult.

“I’m rather ambitious.”

I study her otherwise beautiful face, noting the hard lines on her jaw and the sharp slope of her nose. I catch a slight twitch of her lip, like she's not quite being truthful. "And?"

Wes clears his throat. “Who hurt you?”

She rolls her eyes, but that alone is a giveaway that he struck a nerve. “No one.”

“It was a demon, wasn’t it?” He grips the chains and repositions his footing to focus on her.

Parla steps closer to me. “You think you love him, don’t you? That he’s in love with you?” She shakes her head. “They’re incapable of such, and you know damn well it won’t end well. I’m doing you a favor, Ms. Oliver. The sooner you’re cut from his compulsion, the better. Although…” She swipes my hair off my shoulder and skims her fingers over the mark left behind by Bo. “There’s no escaping that one. You’re better off dead.”

I shrug and try to evade her touch but it’s nearly impossible tied to this chair. “You don’t know what you’re talking about. One of them hurt you, that doesn’t make them all bad. That doesn’t justify eradicating their whole species from our realm.”

She dryly laughs. “Oh, you think I’m going to stop there?”

I process the severity of her statement.
