Chapter 14

~ Heather ~

After an uneventful night at the bar, I had just sent Beth home and Josh was putting the last of the chairs and stools up on the tables. I had gotten the last of the glasses in the dishwasher and had just finished washing the stem wear by hand. I was drying the last of them when Josh walked over and grabbed my rag to start wiping down the inside edge of the bar.

“Thanks, Josh. I don’t know about you, but I’m beat.”

“Yeah, I don’t usually get up early on Saturdays, but I’m glad we could get Emma’s stuff moved and she can get settled in at the new place now. That last place wasn’t somewhere they needed to be. Especially the baby.”

“No kidding. This new place is pretty amazing. I’m glad they’re moved in. We had everything unpacked except her office stuff by the time I came in tonight. Both of them seemed happy.”

He tossed the towel to me when he finished wiping down the bar. “Good. Glad we could help her out.”

“I was serious about having you guys out for pizza and beer. I was serious about offering to pay you in actual money, too….” I watched him closely because I didn’t want him to ever feel like we’d taken advantage of him or his friends.

He smiled. “Naw. Pizza and beer would be good, but we don’t want your money. Emma needed some help and you only asked me, my friends offered. I’m a big believer in karma. Just payin’ it forward assuming I’ll need a hand someday, too.”

I double checked everything behind the bar and gave him a side hug when I reached him. He threw his arm around my shoulders and squeezed me back.

“You’re a good guy, Josh. I’m so glad you work with me.”

He laughed as he reached out and hit the switch to shut off everything but the security lighting. “I am, too. You’re like the big sister I never got to pester growing up.”

I let him go and punched him lightly in his massive bicep. “You’re like the little brother I never got to pick on, too. Better late than never, right?”

We had walked outside and I was locking the doors when I heard him mutter “what the fuck?”

I turned and saw him heading toward the man leaning against my car. It took me a second to recognize John and another second to realize that Josh wasn’t walking his way to say hello.

“Josh! I know him!” I ran after him to be sure he heard me, but he had already slowed down and turned his head toward me while still keeping an eye on John. John had straightened and was now standing beside my car – very tall and still – waiting to see what happened.

“John, I didn’t realize you were waiting on me or I would have finished sooner. John, this is Josh Davis, bouncer, general security and all-around good guy. Josh, this is John Winters my... uh…” John stepped closer to me and looped his arm around my back, settling his hand on my hip.
