Chapter Twenty-Four

Sasha can’t bring herself to go back inside the motel room all alone. Besides, there’s no TV in there anymore and she definitely won’t be able to sleep tonight if Daniel gets eliminated without her knowledge. She promised Jane she wouldn’t watch, and that she’d stay away from The Elimination Game, but if either of her friends were in danger, she’d have no choice but to try to save them the way she and Daniel came for Francie.

So she heads to the motel office, where Levi is just beginning his overnight shift.

“Hey, Sasha,” he says. “Looking for something to do?”

She gives him a sad puppy dog look. “Actually, I was hoping to talk you into hooking that TV back up. They came for Jane this afternoon - she’s going to be on the show.”

“No way,” Levi says. “Tonight?”

“I don’t know,” Sasha admits. “Maybe.”

“Well, I promised Jane I wouldn’t let you watch,” he says. Sasha stares him down and it’s not hard at all to melt his resolve. “Buuut I was going to watch, anyway. You can watch with me.”

“Thanks,” Sasha says. She comes around the end of the counter and he opens the ancient motel laptop, pulling up The Elimination Game website so they can watch the live footage before the show officially airs. They spend a few quiet moments absorbing everything that’s going on inside the house as Levi switches from one camera to the next.

Daniel’s sitting in the living room with Erica and Brody, looking exhausted but not defeated. That warms Sasha’s heart - at least he’s okay. There are a few contestants sitting on the edge of the swimming pool, their feet submerged as they kill time before the challenge begins. The newest addition, Veronica, is sitting in an armchair directly across from the Elimination Room door, staring it down as if she’s trying to intimidate an opponent. Alan is just as nervous as ever, pacing back and forth in the kitchen.

And then Levi switches to a view inside the Elimination Room and Sasha sees Jane.

“Stop!” she says. “Look.”

“There’s our girl,” Levi says. “Wow. So I guess they’re going to put her in this week’s elimination after all.”

“This isn’t good,” Sasha says. “It’s never good when they change up the format.”

“Daniel and Jane still have a two out of twelve chance of surviving the challenge,” Levi points out. “They’ll be okay.”

Sasha starts pacing up and down behind the counter just like Alan is doing on the video feed. She’s never felt more helpless in her life and suddenly, she feels like hitting something. “I don’t know why the hell we thought we could take down The Elimination Game. We’re just a handful of indigents going up against the best-rated show in the country. Of course they would anticipate our moves and counter-attack. God, I’ve been so stupid.”

“You’re not stupid,” Levi says. “You’re brave. And you did get Francie out of there, not to mention yourself and Daniel.”

“And I just sent not one but two of my closest friends back inside that evil house,” Sasha says, still pacing.
