In the morning I woke up smiling, knowing I was in a good mood without remembering why.

And then I looked around and realized Tristan was gone. I pulled on my clothes hastily. I would have understood if he had a job or class to get to. But unless underground fights now took place at—I checked my phone—7:14 a.m., Tristan didn’t need to be anywhere but here in bed, with me.

“Maybe he left a note?” I said to myself, but my voice sounded desperate in the silence of the trailer. I looked around, but there was nothing besides my own artwork.

I ran my hand through my hair, trying not to jump to conclusions. There had to be a reason. I’d call him and ask him…

No, I couldn’t, because he hadn’t given me his phone number. And I hadn’t given him mine. And I couldn’t go talk to him in person, because I still had no idea where he lived.

That’s when I noticed the portrait I’d painted of Tristan was turned around, so that all anyone could see was the back of the canvas.

Goddamnit. I dropped my head into my hands, trying not to cry. Tristan had told me he was messed up, that he wasn’t good for me. And instead of listening to him, and rushed into sex, and now he was gone who knew where for who knew how long.

What had I thought? That my vagina would magically turn him into a stable guy who wanted a relationship and didn’t run away in the middle of the night?

God, I was an idiot.

I wanted to cry. But I also wanted to eat breakfast, because after skipping dinner and athletic sex, I was hungry.

I pulled on a sweatshirt and left to go get food. Maybe one day I’d look back on the story of how I lost my virginity and smile wryly. But right now I just wanted to eat my cereal and pretend nothing had changed.

Because when it came to the important things in my life—my lack of job, my unpaid tuition, the art classes I didn’t dare take, my long-distance best friend—nothing had changed at all.
