Chapter 19
Cleveland had a cabinet with a bottle of fine scotch. It was imported from an area of Scotland that was known for their brilliant liquor. Cleveland had mentioned that he didn't care for it. This evening I was in need of a drink. Luck was with me (for a change). Cleveland had taken his cousin Agnes on a carriage ride, and Bonnie had gone up to her room. I filled a glass and savored every drop. It took me back to my carefree days, when I traveled on horseback around England and Scotland, stopping for week-long parties at friends' country estates. Those days were far behind me now. There were no more friends, no more country estates, no more bloody good scotch in a dank tavern.
The scotch had done its trick. I felt just numb enough to push aside my troubles. I walked out to the stables to check on Arrow. I liked to visit the horse because he was my most loyal friend.
I carried a lantern out to the stables and hung it on the hook to light up the stalls. The stable hands had finished mucking and feeding. Arrow was muzzle deep in a pile of hay when I walked up to his stall. He lifted his head and nickered. "Evening, old boy. Guess I was feeling lonely and needed to see a friend." Arrow lowered his head back to the hay. Arrow and I were tightly bonded, but he was even more bonded to his hay. I leaned my forearms over the edge of his stall. "It's all right. I just need a good listener." As I spoke, both his ears turned forward. He continued to graze. "See, you're listening. The truth is, friend, I'm lost. I have no place in this world. I've been shunned by my family. Not that I consider that a loss because the whole lot of them can rot," I said angrily enough that Arrow lifted his head to see if I was angry at him.
"Sorry, boy, I'll tone it down. Normally, I try not to take anything in this life seriously. It helps me cope with all the disappointment and loss, but I can't get her out of my mind. You know who I'm talking about. The woman with the terrifying cow." He lifted his head again but continued to munch on the stalks of hay sticking out both sides of his mouth. I nodded. "Right. I won't bring it up again. But she's not for me, Arrow. Another man, a fop who probably has no idea just what a treasure he's getting, will marry her soon, and she'll be lost to me forever. I don't think I can ever love another."
"Edward?" a soft voice called from behind.
I spun around. Bonnie had pulled on a dark blue redingote. She smiled. "I could swear you were just telling your horse you loved him."
"Yes, well, he needs words of encouragement when he's eating his dinner," I said. "What are you doing out here?"
Bonnie walked toward me.
