Eleven
I followed Carter to one of the gingham-covered tables. Thor and I were seated with Patrice and Pete Coombs, Quint Arnaut, and a handful of people I hadnât yet met.
The wheels in my mind turned.
Rather than take the open chair next to Thor, I chose a seat next to Quint.
Thorâs brows rose, but he said nothing.
Quintâs brows also rose, but he pulled out my chair. âThis is my lucky day.â
I sat and smiled up at him. âI think itâs mine.â
Consuela sank onto her haunches. âGrrr.â She didnât agree with my assessment. At all.
He sat.
I worried for his anklesâwhen Consuela took against someone, she didnât believe in half-measures.
I scooped her into my lap.
Quint ignored the little dog in my lap and leaned close to my ear. âTrouble in paradise?â
I glanced at Thor, who sat next to Patrice. âNo, but I can talk to Mark whenever I want. Itâs a treat to talk to you.â
Quintâs answering smile didnât touch his eyes. âDid you have fun last night?â
âWe did. Itâs not every day Harry Connick, Jr. sings at a party.â
âGiven who your mother is, I assumed youâd find New Orleans a bit dull.â
âNot in the least. There are so many interesting people to talk to.â
âIf by interesting you mean slightly crazy, I have to agree.â
âI wouldnât go that far.â How to bring up the man heâd been talking to at the party?
âI noticed Patrice palmed you off on Reynard last night. You got both crazy and dull.â
âReynard was entirely charming.â And a tad crazy. And more than a tad dull.
âYou are a very polite young lady.â
It was now or never. I fluttered my eyelashes and served up one of Charissâs best smiles. âI noticed you speaking to someone who looked familiar to me.â
âLast night?â
âYes,â I purred. âSix feet tall, dark hair, brown eyes, a divot in his chin.â I touched the center of my chin.
Quintâs eyes narrowed.
âHe wore a lime necktie.â
He nodded. Once. âJohn Howard.â
âWhy would I recognize him? Is he on television?â
âNo.â Quint lifted a goblet filled with iced tea to his lips.
âThe movies?â I knew that wasnât true. âIs he from New Orleans?â
âHe lives here now.â
âI wonder how I know himâ¦â I paused, hoping heâd fill the silence.
âMaybe heâs got one of those faces.â
âThose faces?â
âPeople think they recognize him when they donât.â
âMaybeâ¦â I drew the word out and doubt rounded its edges. âHow do you know Mr. Howard?â
âYouâre very curious.â His tone was polite, but annoyance flashed across his face.
Iâd stop with the questions when Quint told me what I wanted to know. âAm I?â
âYou are.â He smiled past me at a man taking the chair on the other side of me. âHave you met Brooks Avery? Brooks, this is Poppy Fields.â
I looked up at a man who carried his extra weight with aplomb. Laugh lines radiated from the tanned skin near his eyes and the grin that stretched his face had me smiling too.
âPoppy, itâs a pleasure. Iâm a great fan of your motherâs.â He held out his hand.
My smile faltered a tiny bit.
