Unicursal Hexagram
DATE: 1588 CE ⢠ORIGIN: Prague
SYMBOL: A six-pointed star drawn with one continuous line
MEANING: Protection, perfection, the unity of spiritual and cosmic forces
LOCATION: Pendants, books, occult objects, art, body art, jewellery, décor
WHO: Thelemites, occultists
The standard hexagram is typically formed by the interlocking of two equilateral triangles â as above, so below â granting it the highest possible degree of symmetry for a six-pointed star. The unicursal hexagram, by contrast, first devised by Giordano Bruno in the sixteenth century, possesses fewer axes of symmetry but holds a far more mystically significant quality. Its name highlights this defining attribute: âunicursalâ denotes that it can be drawn in a single, continuous motion without lifting the writing implement from the surface.
The concept of unicursality is considered by some to be a key feature of effective apotropaic symbols. Among its notable proponents was the English occultist Aleister Crowley, who adopted the unicursal hexagram as a personal symbol and esoteric signature. Crowleyâs influence is largely responsible for the symbolâs enduring popularity within occult circles.
The unbroken line of the unicursal hexagram is believed to imbue it with metaphysical integrity, forming an impervious boundary with no gaps or weak points. In protective magic, this is a crucial attribute, as hostile occult forces, often likened to flowing water, will exploit any flaw in a warding structure. A symbol that is continuous and unbroken is thought to provide an unassailable barrier against malevolent entities.
Crowleyâs association with the unicursal hexagram cemented its significance within Thelema, the esoteric philosophy he founded. However, its use extends beyond Thelemic circles; practitioners from diverse esoteric traditions recognize and respect its potency as a powerful and enduring occult emblem.
