That evening, as with most during the Spring and Summer on the Wet Roads, the setting sun’s red rays found the barge rooves crammed with feasting tribes people. They came together at day’s end after hours of foraging, hunting, tending animals and boats, fishing and patrolling. Plates were handed round, stacked high with fresh fish, watercress and hedgerow salads. There was even some bread, traded from land-dwelling tribes along their route.

The Wet Roaders chattered and sang songs that Charlie had never heard before whilst Feral curled up next to her and stared around with wide, tired eyes. The little girl would not leave Charlie’s side, even when it got dark and the older girl went below to the cabin she’d been allocated. So they simply curled up together – warm and safe behind the armoured walls of the barge.

Up above, their guardians talked in low voices.

“We’ll be in Whoosh Turn tomorrow. You have any idea how you gonna get on board that train?” asked Queenie.

“It could be that I require yet more help from you and yours for that,” answered MainSpring, “here is what I propose …”

It was a good few hours before the two of them stopped their conspiratorial conversation and, by then, the two girls below had been sound asleep for a while.
