We reached the docks in record time, mostly thanks to Skeeter, who insisted he drive. On the way over, he ran two stoplights, traveled double the speed limit, and nearly took out his side mirror with a street sign. I had to fight the urge to transform into a bat and dart out the window every couple of miles.

When the car finally stopped, I peeled my white-knuckled hand away from the overhead bar and rubbed the throbbing muscles in my legs where I’d stayed tense the entire ride. Skeeter, however, was happy as a clam and skipped the entire way from the dock’s parking lot down to the water. I followed slowly behind him on rubbery limbs.

The Bluejay Falls docks were essentially a barely used shipping yard. A few of the locals still used it to tie off their boats, but for the most part, the place was abandoned. Empty wrappers and empty beer cans were strewn around one overflowing garbage can, and every few feet, there were dark, wet stains on the pavement. I had no idea what the stains were, and I didn’t want to find out.

The smell of the water surrounded us as we marched up the rickety boardwalk toward the location marker Skeeter had shown me on the map. A small boat rocked against the wooden planks, the sound mimicking our steps. The sea was grumpy today.

“It should be just around the corner.” Skeeter veered off the boardwalk toward the industrial buildings that were tightly squeezed together off to our right.

Most of them were old storage units for the businesses that used to run along the dock back when this place was still operational, but now there were only empty lots where those businesses had once stood. As far as I knew, the remaining buildings were either abandoned or barely used—which seemed to be confirmed by the boarded-up windows and doors.

Trailing after Skeeter, I watched as he disappeared between two especially decrepit-looking units and rushed to catch up.

“Are you sure it’s here?” I called out.

No answer.

Panic crawled up my body, and I bolted forward, my shoulders scraping against the rough walls of the buildings on either side of me. How did Skeeter even fit through here?

My footsteps echoed through the narrow space, pounding in my eardrums. For the first time in my entire life, I understood what it meant to feel claustrophobic. Ahead of me, a sliver of light lit the way. I ran toward it at the speed of light. Emerging on the other side, I skidded to a stop an inch away from colliding with Skeeter’s massive back.

He turned around to see what the commotion was, then shot me a confused look.

As I bent over to catch a breath, Skeeter pointed to a two-story warehouse ahead of us. “It’s that place.”

“Are you sure? It doesn’t look very lively,” I wheezed, still trying to regulate my breathing.

Much like the rest of the surrounding buildings, the warehouse appeared to have been out of use for quite some time.
