Bruce Adams strode into the Ritz-Carlton, looking every inch the successful collaborator. His son, Kurt, trailed behind him.

“What are you going to tell them? We were supposed to be able to deliver River Run to them.”

“Don’t you worry about that, boy. I’m not done with River Run, but with Cash Waverly away from Koyama' and Clay on the run from the law, that leaves them vulnerable.”

“Do you think Clay killed his sire?”

“Cyrus was a traitorous, greedy bastard, but to be honest, I can’t see any of those arrogant pricks shooting him in the back.”

“You seem to know an awful lot about it,” said Kurt.

“I have some folks who are sympathetic to our cause of converting both Koyama' and River Run into profitable ventures.”

“How did you get Merrick Development to let us in on this deal?”

The senior Adams’s lips curled up. “Who do you think came up with this idea? It sure as hell wasn’t those backwoods Cajuns. I venture capitalized those idiots for the resort and casino on their own land. They got tired of not being able to operate in New Orleans. The alpha wolf there runs that city like his own fiefdom. They may not have the Crescent City, but at least they’re not living off that wolf pack’s leavings. They were taking scraps from his table, and somebody needed to boot them in the ass.”

“But Koyama' and River Run are both heritage ranches.”

“I don’t give a shit. The Waverlys have been blocking me for years and I’m tired of it. As for River Run, if you could have kept your dick out of other men, we could have scooped it up and added to our own holdings, then we’d have owned one of those high-falutin’ heritage ranches. But instead, you blew it and like usual, I had to clean up after you. Sometimes I wish I’d sired that girl. Or better yet, found a way to take her to mate.”

“Evie never would have married you.”

“I should have put the squeeze on the bank and gotten that note. With the right kind of enticements and enough time, I could’ve made Henry see that he should give Evie to me.”

Kurt shook his head. “She wouldn’t have agreed.”

“She wouldn’t have had a choice. I’m old school and so is Henry. That girl would have done what she was told.”

That topic of conversation abruptly ended as they were greeted by Joseph Merrick, the oldest son of the Louisiana claw’s leader.

Bruce held out his hand to shake. “Joseph, it’s good to see you again. You remember my son, Kurt.”

“I do. I was surprised you wanted to meet in Denver.” His tone was neutral.

“Well, there’s been a snag in getting River Run. Nothing we can’t handle with time.”

An imposing figure, Joseph Merrick gestured them toward their seats at the conference table. “That’s not the way I hear it. I hear your boy fucked up royally and one of the Waverly boys is now mated to the daughter and has assumed leadership.”

“True enough. But Cash is the businessman of Koyama'.
