After saying their goodbyes Jia and Eui returned home and now sat staring at the ring sitting on the tea table between them.

"You definitely got scammed."

Eui was skeptical about the value of the item, though she had to admit that it lit up impressively to her mana senses. Jia had tried wearing the ring, but it was far too big for her fingers and was awkward to wear around a thumb.

"I don’t think Elder Qin lied to me, and Yan Zhihao seemed really upset about losing it. I just can’t figure out how to use it."

Jia grumbled in frustration. She had tried activating it like a formation or talisman, but that hadn’t worked with either mana or ki. Eui rested her head on one hand with a bored expression.

"Maybe you have to use qi. That would be a pretty cruel prank, but I wouldn’t put it past them."

"Yan, maybe, but we don’t know anything about Elder Qin."

Eui shook her head and smirked at Jia.

"You mean you don’t. Qin Zhao is a third generation member of Qin’s eponymous imperial clan. The Qin as a nation, but especially the Qin clan themselves, are generally xenophobic in the extreme. To them, the people of Yamato are savage barbarians, and us beastkin are no different from animals."

Jia’s jaw dropped as she stared at Eui incredulously.

"How do you know all that!? We’ve been meditating together and sharing thoughts and memories all week and I never even got a hint of that! Also, third generation as in the God-Emperor is his grandfather? Isn’t that kind of a big deal?"

Eui snickered as she mercilessly enjoyed Jia’s confusion.

"Yeah, he’s the Emperor’s grandson, but that’s actually not that big a deal. The old fucker’s been around for centuries and he has literally thousands of grandchildren. As for how I know...hehehe, that’s a secret."

Jia stared flatly at Eui, who just giggled uncontrollably in response, clearly enjoying herself. She would extract the answer out of Eui one way or another later, but for now she had bigger concerns.

"Fine, whatever, I still don’t think that’s it. Mana, ki, and qi are all the same thing aren’t they? If it works with one, it should work with another."

Eui calmed down from her incessant snickering long enough to respond.

"Eh, not necessarily. Really complex formations can be very picky about the energy used to activate them. That’s why talismans have to be specially prepared in order to allow others to cast them."

Jia nodded. That had been why she hadn’t doubled up with Eui to write a bunch of extra shock spells. Eui frowned and scratched her chin thoughtfully for a moment, then looked up at Jia.

"What about making a circuit of ki through it, like with the attunement rod? Or with mana like when we meditate?"

Jia shrugged, it was worth a try at least. She slipped the ring onto the middle finger of her right hand, where it sat loosely. Closing her eyes, she focused on the flow of ki in her hand, concentrating on the smaller threads of ki that loosely followed her blood vessels.
