Chapter Nineteen

The pack stopped for water and rest when the rain let up, which was late in the evening, around eleven. Daks had driven the pack hard, but it was necessary with the threat that faced us. He wasn’t happy until we were far away from the town where the attacks took place.

Daks separated me from the rest of the pack and walked me down to an overgrown field by the edge of the woods.

“Wide open spaces allow for less collateral damage,” Daks explained as we sifted through the tall grass. “Since you’re not experienced with your powers yet, you’re going to be a little sloppy. I don’t want you leaving marks in the woods because it would be a dead giveaway to the hunters, so you’re going to practice out here.”

I looked around at the empty field. “What should I do?” I asked.

“Well, I heard from Tynan that you tried to punch him,” Daks said with a laugh.

“Oh my god, he told you that?” I covered my mouth. “That bastard doesn’t know when to keep his mouth shut.”

Daks laughed again, brushing thick strands of wet hair from his face. “I’m sure he had it coming, but what I want you to do is direct your energy better next time. He shouldn’t have been able to block your punch.”

I nodded, but it seemed impossible. Tynan and the other shifters were lightning fast. There was no way I’d be able to hit them fast enough to where they couldn’t just catch my fist.

“Take your crystal and hold it with your left hand,” Daks said, mirroring the motion with his own crystal. “Then, with your other hand, throw a punch at my chest. Just aim for the center. You’re not going to break anything.”

I frowned as I wrapped my hand around the purple crystal. I felt it grow warm in my hand, but I didn’t have the same energy I had at the diner. The rage was missing. I couldn’t act without being angry.

“I know what you’re feeling,” Daks said, circling around me. “But you need to dig deeper. There’s energy there that you haven’t tapped into yet.”

I squeezed my eyes shut and tried harder, channeling the meditative state that had first enlightened me to the powers I could have if I trusted the crystal. I sunk into a black ooze in my head, unusual symbols soaring across my vision like shooting stars.

I felt the power pulsating in my hand, and I tried to go deeper, only for Daks to interrupt me. “Dig deeper,” he said, and my eyes popped open.

“Could you shut up for a second?” I asked, frustration replacing the calm meditative state I had almost achieved.

He chuckled. “Punch me. Do it. Right in the chest.”

I rolled my eyes. “I’m not going to punch you. I’m not ready.”

He leaned forward. “Do it. You just have to dig–”

My hand shot out faster than I could control it, slamming into Dak’s chest so hard that my knuckles popped. He didn’t just stumble
