Chapter

Ten

Amonth later, Kerac’s feelings for Darolen had only grown. He wished he could sleep next to the man so they could spend even more time together even though they spent most of their days together when they could outside of their duties.

They had had more dates, sometimes going into the city for their taverns, sometimes just going horseback riding to get out of the city walls. The ones Kerac loved the most, however, were the ones like they were on today.

This morning, Darolen had helped train Kerac in the arena. And that was another thing. With Darolen training him twice a day, Kerac’s mentor was surprised at his progress and graduated him early. But today, after their training, Darolen had parted ways for their bathing ritual to wash away the sweat and stopped by when he was through to take Kerac out. They had no place in mind. He took Kerac’s hand and said, “I just want to spend time with you. Why don’t we go for a walk in the city and see what we can get into?”

Kerac stiffened. “What?”

Darolen gave him a gentle look and cupped Kerac’s face in his warm hands. “Staying inside the monastery isn’t healthy. You need to be gently pushed into social situations outside your comfort zone if you want to become Aesriphos as you dream of. You need sunshine, fresh air, and strangers in a safe environment.”

When Kerac trembled, Darolen pulled him against his chest and kissed the side of his neck. “I will be there to protect you the entire time. I won’t leave you alone.”

“Promise?” Kerac whispered.

Darolen gave him a tight squeeze. “You have my solemn word.”

Kerac gasped. “You don’t have to! Darolen…”

Darolen grinned as he paid for a new set of armor for Kerac. “Yes. I do. You’ve gained muscle since you started training with me. And I want to see you comfortable.”

“But—”

Turning, Darolen took his hand and laced their fingers together. “Please let me do this. It makes me happy to be able to get you things you need.”

Kerac blushed and ducked his head. “Oh, well… Uhm… Okay. If it truly makes you happy.”

“It truly does.” He leaned in and kissed Kerac’s temple. “I enjoy caring for you.”

Korvan, the armorsmith, snorted. “You two adorable shits get out of my shop before my teeth rot.”

Darolen’s deep bass chuckle rumbled up Kerac’s spine, then went straight to his dick. He shifted to try to rid himself of the discomfort and let Darolen tug him out of the shop. He should have known why Darolen had him measured, but he hadn’t expected a full suit of armor and padding. But, if it made Darolen happy, he couldn’t say no. It wasn’t in him to stomp on another person’s happiness. And he did need a new suit of armor.

“You’re thinking too hard again,” Darolen murmured. He kept Kerac tight against his side, between himself and the walls of the buildings they passed as they walked through the city.

“I—I just…” Kerac sighed and tucked
