Chapter Eleven

Since it didn’t seem like they’d be left alone to finish what Sky had started, Victor decided it was best they head to the party. Considering that Victor almost had to beg for Sky to stay for dinner the previous night, he was extremely surprised Sky agreed to stay. Once their bodies had settled and the heat was back to a controllable simmer, they left the car to join the rest of the crew.

Celestine was getting a bonfire going, and the smile on his face told Victor the ticket sales had been fantastic. The show itself had been one of the best they’d ever done, and that paired with the enthusiastic crowd made everyone’s spirits high.

Victor was thrilled that the show had gone well, and the audience promised a successful tour here, but his mind was still stuck in a fog from Sky’s kiss. Moving towards the party felt like he was halfway flying, his feet barely touching the ground. The warmth of Sky’s fingers was still on his skin, his lips tasting like the black-feathered dream that had pressed him up against the wall.

As they neared the bonfire, Victor had the urge to take his hand but decided it wasn’t his place to make that kind of claim.

“That was fast,” Aggie teased in a dry tone, handing Victor a bottle with amber alcohol inside.

Victor hummed a mock laugh and passed Sky the bottle to have the first drink. Sky popped the cork and took a proper swallow, passing it back without even so much as a flinch from the burn. Gods, he was ticking off all Victor’s boxes tonight.

“We were informed tardiness was bad luck,” Sky added as Victor took a swig of alcohol. “I’m not known for my speed.”

Aggie laughed as Victor coughed some alcohol out of his nose.

Sky’s smirk made Victor’s chest tighten as much as the burn of the alcohol did.

Maybe this night still had some promise.

“Everyone!” Celestine announced as he gestured for everyone’s attention. The crew quieted as they turned their attention to their ringleader, who was glowing with pride. “Tonight was not only one of the best performances we’ve had to date, but a new ticket record!” He allowed everyone to cheer before waving for them to quiet down. “We have big plans for this town. Big plans and bigger shows! But tonight, my ragtag band, we celebrate.”

Victor lifted his bottle with everyone else as Celestine raised his glass for a toast.

“Opening night,” Celestine said with his clear, warm voice, “is for us. Our family. The ones here and the ones gone. Hold them in your thoughts and drink to them.”

Mom.

Victor dipped his bottle, pouring a swallow of alcohol into the dirt along with most others in the crew, including Celestine. After a moment of silence, Celestine continued.

“May they bring us luck and strong winds.”

“Luck and strong winds!” everyone echoed cheerfully, taking a swig of alcohol as music started to play. While most of the people gathered around the fire were the crew, Victor noticed a couple of the local folk melding into the party.
