A tension headache crawled up the back of Imogen’s neck. She’d tried to drink the stress away, hoping it would make dealing with all those snobby bastards easier, but that only added to the throbbing between her ears.

Only an hour or so had passed since the last of the guests arrived, and dinner would be served within the next hour. If she could get a damn minute to herself, she would’ve tried a shower, but time was not a luxury she could afford. Veronica would expect her to have everything ready and personally oversee the kitchen and waitstaff.

And after the dessert tray debacle, you sure as hell won’t be forgiven for screwing anything up this time. Not that Veronica ever actually forgave you for that either.

She wet a hand towel under the faucet in the bathroom, wrung it out, and held it to the back of her neck. Not quite as good as a shower, but the cool water helped ease the pain.

Imogen had no delusions about this weekend. This was not a getaway time of fun and luxury. She wasn’t one of Veronica’s guests. She was expected to work. Normally, this wouldn’t have bothered her, but in all the rush of packing for Queen High Bitch, she’d been forced to leave town before she could check in with the police about Lyndsay. Six days had gone by without word from her.

Her imagination ran wild with worry. Old memories of The Terror replayed when she closed her eyes. Only now, Lyndsay was the one under the knife, while Imogen was forced to watch.

Since she’d hardly slept at all during the week, the bags under her eyes were large enough to be seen from space. Imogen stared in the bathroom mirror, the shadows making the rest of her face even paler and accentuating her thin scars.

Her appearance already drew enough attention, and she didn’t need any more of Veronica’s snide comments. Maybe a little coffee would perk her up.

Leaving the bathroom, Imogen stepped into the palatial hallway and made her way to the kitchen.

A wave of heat stifled her as she entered the busy room. None of the chefs seemed to be affected by the warmth, everyone bustling around at their stations.

Behind the cooking station—where two chefs worked in tandem, one prepping food on the massive stone island and the other attending to the industrial-sized, stainless steel range with red knobs—was the butler’s pantry.

Earlier in the week, Veronica had Imogen order a new cappuccino machine to be installed there. She’d been dying to try it.

The glow of the blue LED drew her gaze the moment she stepped into the dimly lit passage between the kitchen and dining room. As sleek as it looked, Imogen realized she had no clue how to use it.

She rummaged through cabinets and doors. “Where’s the damn user manual?”

A quiet cough startled her.

Imogen jerked around to find a young man dressed in a chef’s uniform approaching her. “James, hi. Please tell me you know how this thing works?”

James gestured to the machine.
