The Sun is approached. ‘She whom you seek,’ he says, ‘so you may not labour in vain, rules the third kingdom as the bride of Jupiter’s brother.’

Having long lamented to herself, she thus addressed the Thunderer (and very great in her look were the signs of her anguish):

‘If you remember by whom Persephone was born to me, she ought to have a half of your concern. I have wandered throughout the world, and all I have discovered is the outrage of the deed. The abductor has the reward of his crime. But Persephone does not deserve a brigand husband, and for me a son-in-law was not to be acquired in this way. What worse would I have suffered as a slave, if Gyges had been victorious, than I have now suffered with you holding sway in heaven? But let him get away with it unpunished, I shall endure these things without seeking vengeance. Let him give her back, and mend his earlier deeds with new ones.’
