The Sentinel exploded! Kat jumped out, her shields barely above zero. It worked, but it had been so very close. If she could have breathed a sigh of relief, she would have. She had gambled with the lives of her humans and even her own because she knew the Princess wouldnât have it any other way. Luckily, it had worked!
Caught by surprise with the destruction of one of their ships, the Sentinels stopped firing at the humans. It didnât help that Absolum was screaming that they had to protect his ship at all costs. By the time theyâd gotten organized, the last of the human ships were through the bottleneck.
âWeâve got to turn around!â Absolum shrieked. âYou canât protect me with only three ships.â
Apogee wanted to tell him that if he would just move his ship to one of the diamond points, it would still work, but he knew it would be wasted breath. That suggestion would fall on deaf ears. For himself, he wasnât worried. He had a good, legal backup!
When the mystery ships didnât attack, he thought perhaps it didnât matter. Perhaps they would still live. Unfortunately, the reprieve was short lived. The Sentinel on the new lead corner came under attack by two of those monsters. It disappeared in a huge explosion as two of those beams caught him.
They were running now, but Apogee knew it wouldnât matter. The other ships would die soon, and there was no way to outrun those mysterious ships.
Absolum was practically babbling now, almost crying, and heâd demanded they redline the drives. âGet me out of here!â he demanded.
Not going to work, Apogee thought, even as the ones left behind faced four ships each and died even quicker. Now the superdreadnoughts and the escorts began exploding as well. Soon it would be them.
âMore power to the shields,â Absolum screamed as one of those ships appeared in front of them. âFire everything we have at him!â
Too late now, Apogee wanted to tell him. You cut the power on the beam, your only real defense against these ships. Our shields may be stronger, but theyâre nothing against that beam.
Before he could speak, a message came in from the ship. It was a human! The humans have this kind of technology? We never stood a chance â we should have left them alone!
Apogee opened his mouth to say just that to Absolum, but he didnât get a chance to say it.
The ship fired its beam.
