Chapter 12

“I don’t mean to be a buzzkill, guys, but I think I need an ice pack for my ankle.”

“Ah, shit, Maisie,” Leo groaned. “I’m sorry.”

“Well, we were kind of distracted,” Maze snickered.

“I’ll go.” Grayson moved to get up and Maze held him back.

“Leo can go. You turn on the lamp and let me get a good look at you.”

Leo retrieved his shorts and stepped into them, leaving to fetch an ice pack.

Grayson groaned as he reached for the lamp on the nightstand and turned it on. No wonder he groaned! An ugly bruise spread across his ribs. Anger squeezed her throat and she checked the rest of his body. The damage seemed limited to his ribs and face.

“Guy in baggy clothing? Grey plaid jacket?”

Grayson jerked upright in alarm. “Yeah! Not you, too?”

“No,” she growled. “He paid me a visit, but this,” she motioned over her body, “is a Val Simmons special.”

“No way. She attacked you?”

“She heard Leo was leaving town and lost her everloving mind. She only shoved me, but gravity did the rest.”

“My poor, Maisie.” Grayson pulled her into a cuddle and kissed the top of her face.

Leo entered with an ice pack in each hand and tossed one to Grayson. “So who did this to you?”

Leo propped her leg up on a pillow and put the other ice pack on her ankle. Maze hissed in response to the throbbing.

“I’m not sure of his name.” Maze moved Grayson’s hand so his ice pack was on his bruised ribs. “He knew my mother. I saw him the other day at the store. He was wearing her sunglasses.”

Leo sat on the edge of the bed. “Why didn’t you say something?”

Maze rolled her eyes at Leo. “Was kinda distracted. You were MIA, Grayson was acting like I had the plague –”

“Okay, okay. Fair point.”

“What did he want?”

“Money. Same as Jennifer.”

Rum Tum poked his head into the room, saw his people gathered on the bed, and joined them with a happy chirp.

“He asked if I was one of the Blakes,” Grayson explained. “When I said yes, he demanded I give him cash. I thought he was a homeless guy. I told him I didn’t carry cash, but I could drive him to the shelter where he could get a hot meal and good night’s sleep.”

Maze snortled and he threw her a wounded expression.

“I was just picturing the look on his face when you said that.”

“It wasn’t funny. He was furious.”

Maze recalled the man’s grotesque transformation when she’d called him a junkie and sobered. “I know. I’m sorry. I called him a junkie and he . . . if Val hadn’t shown up . . . she may have saved my life.”

“We should report him to the police,” Leo decided.

Maze wanted to argue, but the man made it clear he would be back for a payout. She nodded reluctantly. “I’ll call Corporal Davis tomorrow. Maybe he knows who this guy is.”

Leo nodded, satisfied. “Now, I think you both need rest.”

“Don’t go,” Maze whined. “I don’t want to be alone tonight.
