Chapter Twelve: An Inappropriate Use of Office Space

Finals were a lock for me even though midterms had been extremely stressful in between my duties as president and my job manning the desk at Sink Hall. Luckily, Minnie had picked up the slack once again. I was surprised to find that I had received all As. My grades were more or less set in stone.

On the other hand, Minnie had been burning the candle at both ends for far too long and was at risk of getting a less than perfect grade in a marketing class that had been giving her trouble. In exchange for sacrificing so much for me during midterms, I took on all her duties and office hours toward the end of the semester. It was the least I could do.

It was one week before finals officially began at around nine o’clock at night when I realized that I hadn’t touched my second cup of coffee for the day. I had been so preoccupied with planning my involvement with that leadership retreat up in Wisconsin and studying for finals that I hadn’t even had the opportunity to touch it since I sat down. Testing the stuff, I brought it to my lips to discover that it had gone as cold and as bitter as the ash of a burnt strychnine tree. What a shame. At least it afforded me the opportunity to get up and stretch my legs in pursuit of another.

The coffee served in the student run café called “The Hole” in the basement of the union was pretty mediocre, but at least it was served more competently and for three dollars less than that of the chain of coffee shops throughout campus that State simply set up to employ the kids who had to fulfill work study credits.

Conversely, the students who served up joe at The Hole were volunteers who were just happy to be there to talk with friends about nerdy stuff and drink way too much coffee. I liked that, so even though we had a coffee machine in the office that we shared with the campus feminists, I liked to make a run over to The Hole every once and a while. Besides, the machine in the office was starting to make funny tasting coffee. I think it was due for a vinegar rinse.

It was nice to temporarily be in an environment where people weren’t plotting and scheming their next political move or constantly looking over their shoulders or checking their words for fear that they were representing an organization poorly. Technically, The Hole had officially closed half an hour beforehand, but it was the sort of place where everyone had such a good time even when they were doing the “work” associated with the place, they didn’t mind hanging around after the posted times for hours sometimes.

People were just hanging out and having fun. In a back corner, a group of grubby young men and women played some sort of table top game and talked trash to one another.
