Chapter 16

“Get in,” Cade said to Raven as he looped around the F-650.

Seeing her father going for the passenger side, she said, “I’m driving?”

“Why not? You did fine yesterday.” He hopped in, closed the door, and scooped up his SBR.

Raven propped her rifle on the seat, suppressor aimed at the floor, then hopped in. Leaving the seat position and mirrors alone, she fired the engine and got the pickup moving toward the apex. After barreling down the hill, she slowed on the flat. Reaching the point in the road where she had placed the radio, she pulled the F-650 around until it was perpendicular to the Ram, then brought it to a complete stop.

Cade launched from the passenger seat, gun in hand, and stalked toward the prostrate would-be bandits.

Following directions issued to her during the short drive off the hill, Raven put the transmission into Park and set the brake. She grabbed the spare earbud for the radio from the console and snatched up her SBR. Leaving the motor running, she exited the pickup, head on a swivel, and went to retrieve the Motorola. Scooping the radio off the road, she stuck the bud in one ear and plugged it into the handset. No sooner had she tuned to the new channel than she heard Harley reporting that the herd had breached the fence and was pouring onto the highway. When she reunited with her father on the opposite side of the pickup, she remained just outside of the followers’ reach and trained her rifle on the man.

If he tries to run, shoot him. If she tries to run, shoot him.

Seeing the earbud in his daughter’s ear, Cade asked her if she had heard the latest SITREP. Receiving an affirmative, he crouched down beside the man and demanded he make eye contact. “Why are you following us?” he asked, a hint of menace in his tone.

The man shook his head, a slow side-to-side wag, then said, “You’re mistaken.”

“We were stopped a few miles back and saw your evasive move,” Cade said, watching for any tells—uneasy squirming, change in breathing, perspiration, breaking eye contact. Seeing none of the above, he continued, “It was a bit clumsy. If we wouldn’t have had a person on rear guard, you would have gotten away with it.”

The man looked in the woman’s direction. Going by the expression on his face, he was assigning her all the blame for them getting caught.

Cade rose, clicked the SBR’s selector to Fire, shouldered the carbine, then fired a single round into the road just inches in front of the man’s face. He had angled the shot so that the spray of asphalt dislodged by the bullet missed the man entirely.

Arching his back and turning his face away from the point of impact, the man said, “You’re not the sheriff, God damn it. Last I checked you were just an Indiana Jones wannabe.”

Resisting the impulse to introduce the toe of his Danner to the man’s front teeth, Cade stalked off toward the Ram.
