In the oldest tales, the fairies were said to be born from the fallen angels. According to the legend, as the angels fell from heaven, they landed in various places, and God froze them in place. Some landed in fire, some in the earth, some in water, and some in air. The angels became entangled in the material physical world, and thus the fairies were born.
As noted earlier, the word fairy is related to the goddess of fate, who gives one his lot in life, or destiny. In ancient Greek mythology, three Fates wove the web of life, described as a spider’s web or a matrix that contained the past, present, and future of the world. Our “lot in life” was determined by our fate and could be revealed by our familiar spirits and the fairies of Celtic myths who were the harbingers of our fates. Most of the divinations people sought in olden times regarded relationships—particularly whether a relationship was in accordance with one’s fate or destiny. One’s fortune, guided by the Roman goddess Fortuna, was also directly related to betrothal and marriage. A dowry was a fortune that could be earned through a fated relationship. Interesting the marriage reference here, which seems an echo of the holy marriage and hieros gamos component of the soul mate. The word fairy could also mean “spirit bride,” when viewed through this word meaning. There were even pagan references to making libido fetishes from the idols of fairies or the fate goddesses in the same way the pagans used idol worship to form a relationship with the spirit. Barbara G. Walker, in her encyclopedia of myths, recounts the following tale.
