CHAPTER 9

Alec didn’t show up at work Monday morning.

Christian was sick with fear.

It had been two, long, awful days Saturday and Sunday and

although he’d wanted nothing more than to go find Alec, he hadn’t,

deciding the man needed time, deserved it after everything Christian

had dumped on him Friday night.

Instead, he’d spent the weekend worried about and missing Alec

like hell, and dealing with a double helping of bad news from England.

Jamie had called while Bella was still with Christian Saturday morning

to say that a set of scrolls had been unearthed at one of the

archaeological sites, but within hours of the find, they’d been stolen.

Clearly Rogan had found what he was looking for. So now the pressure

was on even more to find the amulet before Rogan did.

Christian had been forced to return to England briefly on Saturday

to deal with some things, but had returned Saturday night. Although the

double round of teleportation—there and back again on the same day—

had left him exhausted, he couldn’t stand the thought of being away for

any longer than necessary in case Alec tried to get in touch with him or

needed him.

But now he wished with all his heart and soul that he’d gone

looking for Alec sooner.

When Alec hadn’t arrived at the police station by 8:00 A.M.—late

for him, at least since Christian had been working with him—Christian

went to his house. No Jeep Wrangler parked in front, and the house was

empty and just as they’d left it Friday night. Empty beer bottles still

littered the coffee table. The bed hadn’t been slept in. The pillow he’d

pulled to the floor to rest Alec’s head on after the guiller attack still lay

in the same spot. It didn’t look like Alec had even been home. With one

exception…the folders containing the victims’ background information

were missing.

Had Alec gone back to his house to get them after he’d left the

hotel? But if so, then what? Had the guiller found him and killed him

wherever he might have gone? Except there’d been no reports of

another murder or a dead body. Christian had already checked through

the records this morning at the police station when Alec first hadn’t

shown up.

He called the hospitals, but none of them had admitted a patient

with Alec’s description.

He contacted Bella and had her do a locator spell—something she

was quite adept at—but it turned up nothing. She couldn’t find him

anywhere. It was like he’d dropped off the face of the Earth.

When Christian returned to the station, he went to Martin Shanahan.

Alec had said the man was a good friend and like family to him, and

right now, Christian needed someone to talk to.

“Captain, do you have a few minutes?” he asked, standing in the

doorway of Shanahan’s office.

“Sure, come on!” The gray-haired burly man smiled and waved him

in from where he sat as his desk.

Christian entered and shut the door behind him.

“Sit. What can I do for you?”

He sank into the vinyl chair across the desk from the captain. “I’m

worried about Alec.”

The man’s jovial expression was immediately replaced by one of

concern. He leaned forward on his elbows propped on his desk and his

dark eyes, behind wire-framed glasses, leveled a stare at Christian.
