MEGAN

SAYING YES TO A DATE with Brooks had seemed like a good idea last week, when we’d just flirty-bonded over outsmarting Ted and his dumb dare. In my defense, I hadn’t been thinking clearly when he’d asked me. I’d still been stuck on how amazing his arms had felt around me when we were sneaking around Mr. Laurence’s hedge.

But now, as I studied myself in the mirror, I felt panic setting in.

On the outside, I looked fine. My hair was silky-smooth, my makeup flawless, and my yellow, just-above-the-knee dress totally cute. I looked the part of the perfect date. But my appearance was the only thing I could control. Everything else was out of my control, and that was scary.

Yes, we’d bonded over various small things in the weeks since he’d moved in next door. But it would only take a few minutes of serious conversation for him to realize he was so much smarter than me. Him and his perfect CAT score. I’d gotten an 82 when I took it last year. Two points higher than average. Not impressive at all.

I didn’t know all those pieces of trivia he knew or that thing about the flu not being caused by being too cold. I couldn’t remember the lines I’d been studying for weeks, much less the entire cast’s lines after looking at the script for one day. I didn’t read thousand-page books with tiny print. I liked romance novels and The Hunger Games.

He listened to political podcasts, and I watched YouTube makeup tutorials.

Teachers chose him to help other students do well on college entrance exams, and the number one thing I was looking forward to getting out of the college experience was living in a sorority house.

This date was going to be a disaster.

He was going to ask me what I thought about peace treaties in the Middle East, and the biggest news I was up on was who got eliminated last week on The Bachelor.

Up until now, we’d only interacted in small ways for limited amounts of time, but we had hours and hours of time together today, and he was only going to need about fifteen minutes before he realized how much smarter than me he was.

Maybe I could direct the entire conversation toward him and hang on every word he said. I was a great cheerleader, after all. I could make it all about him and gush over how incredible he was. Maybe then he wouldn’t notice how basic I was compared to him.

I tried not to feel guilty about that plan. If Joanna witnessed me do that on a date, she’d kill me. Fortunately, Rick was over, so Joanna was watching movies in the attic with him. Otherwise, she’d probably be hounding me as I got ready.

Bethany was at the hospital for her weekend volunteer shift, so it was only Mya who had hung out in my room while I got ready, saying things like, “You look so, so pretty, Megs,” and “Wear this lipstick. It’ll make him want to kiss you.
