By the time we made it back to the beach, I was exhausted.

I collapsed on the sand, taking the surf leash off my ankle. Laying back, I closed my eyes, not caring that there wasn’t a towel under me.

Feeling Nolan sit down beside me, I kept my eyes closed with my arms and legs stretched out. “I could fall asleep right here. Not even kidding,” I murmured.

We’d only been out there an hour. Maybe less, yet I was completely wiped.

Nolan chuckled beside me. “Sure. The sunburn will wake you up later.”

I sat right up. “And I’m done with that.”

Nolan grinned, and I threw some sand at him.

I leaned back on my arms and closed my eyes for a second, taking in a little more sun.

“Can I ask you something?” Nolan asked.

I looked at him, wondering what he wanted to know. He seemed kind of serious, but his eyes less so.

“What does your name mean?” he asked.

“Dulce means sweet in Spanish,” I said.

A smile played on his lips.

“I know,” I replied. “It’s kind of cheesy in English, but it’s a cute name where I come from.”

Nolan leaned forward. “It’s not that. I’m just wondering how you got that name.”

I threw more sand at him, making sure not to get him in the face, and he began laughing again.

Loving the sound of it, I couldn’t help but smile and attempt to memorize it.

“Seriously, though,” I joked, “I’m not sure why people always say that.”

We settled back down, and I wondered how we had gotten to this place where I felt comfortable being sarcastic around him.

Being myself around him.

Sitting this close to him.

That thought had me biting my lip and staring at my sand-covered feet.

I lay back down without really thinking about it, and he did the same, resting his head back on his arms.

“Seriously, though,” he said. “You scared me for a minute out there. I just kept thinking, ‘she said she knew how to swim!’”

I don’t know why but that had me laughing non-stop. Enough that tears began to fill my eyes.

Nolan laughed too, but it was the kind where he wasn’t sure if I was okay or not and what exactly about me almost dying out there on my first day was so funny to me.

When I could finally talk, I said, “I lied. I’m a terrible swimmer.”

“What?” Nolan demanded. “You could’ve warned me.”

I shrugged. “Why? So you could bring along some floaties for me?”

He stared at me. “Yeah, exactly. Would’ve saved us a lot of trouble, actually.”

That had him laughing, and I hit him playfully, realizing right then how close we were.

Just another couple of inches, and our bodies would be touching.

Not sure how I felt about that, I sat up.

He sat up too. “So, you want to go grab something to eat?”

I thought about that for a second, knowing it wasn’t really in the budget. “Sure.”

We walked back to Nolan’s car, getting as much sand off of us as possible.

“Don’t worry,” Nolan said as I paused in front of his car, “I’ll vacuum it later.
