Sous Ve was in the Garden District. It was an invite-only, exclusive restaurant that was out in the open. The entrance was an archway of overgrown flowers leading people through to the garden. The dining area was a scruffy bed of grass, surrounded by twisted hedges and ascending plants that made the outer walls that separated the dining area from the kitchen. A monstrous tree stood in the center, its branches forming an almost protective roof for those dining under the canopy. The smaller flower bushes had a look of despair, possibly in need of some care and love; however, that was the design. Rabbits and other woodland creatures roamed the floors, keeping the grass and plants trimmed. The tree, a White Oak with black leaves, had stood there for centuries.

“Can I help you?” asked the hostess.

“I’m looking for some friends,” Payton replied.

“I’m sorry, sir, but this restaurant is by invitation only, and our tables are set ahead of time.”

“That’s okay. I’m sure you can change things. Just go to the table for Q and Madam Lee and let them know I’m here. They’ll clear this up, and you’ll see.”

“Persona non grata,” the hostess called out.

“Now, why’d you have to go and do that?” Payton said as two men stepped into the walkway in front of him, and another two approached from behind him.

“We don’t disturb our guests once they are seated. So, I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

“Lady, you can either disturb one table, or I’ll disturb them all.”

Payton walked past her, starting down the covered walkway.

“You really don’t want to do this,” Payton said.

“No, no, we don’t, but a standard is set, and rules are rules,” said one of the men.

With a smooth wave of Payton’s right hand, several vines in the covered walkway began to pulse. In his left-hand, flames trickled from his fingertips.

The hostess pressed her lips together. “Go to the Rose table and see if they are expecting…”

“Payton.”

“See if they are expecting this, Payton.”

Payton waited. It only took a few moments for the man to return and show him to the table.

“Payton,” Q said as he stood and shook his hand.

“Quentin,” Payton returned.

A smile found its way to Q’s lips.

“We all have our little spies,” Payton said, looking at McKenzie.

“You came to me,” she replied. “Unless you’ve already forgotten about me.”

“Madam Lee,” Payton said to a slight nod from her, affirming the correct name. “It’s a pleasure to see you.”

“Likewise,” Madam Lee returned.

“Just so you know,” Q said as he drew Payton’s attention, “You’ve now had us black-balled from this establishment for six months.”

“That’s okay,” he responded.

“Okay?” Madam Lee replied, looking annoyed.

Payton pulled out a chain-link pouch from inside his coat. As he slightly opened it, sparks shot from link to link, causing McKenzie and Madam Lee to jump a little. After extending the drawstring, he reached in with his fingers and pulled out a rolled parchment.

“How is that in there?” McKenzie asked, her eyes wide with astonishment.

“Dear, you’re not the only one who can hold large things in a small pouch…” Payton paused for dramatic effect.
