Chapter Fifteen

“So…select your first question from the board. Column One, Two, or Three.” Zee spoke.

The Umbraeons’ apparent leader spoke first. “We can’t read the columns.” Its voice sounded gravelly, and even though I knew the device in my ear was translating it, I couldn’t help but think its voice probably sounded like rocks being shook up in a coffee can.

“Of course you can’t! Nobody can who doesn’t have reading augmentation!” Zee laughed. The crowd laughed with him. “Take a guess…”

The Umbraeon leader shifted and looked at the others. They chattered just low enough for my translation device to not pick up. At last, it turned to Zee. “Three?”

“Okay, so we’ll go with Ancient Multiverse Civilizations!” Zee announced. “Good choice!” He paused. “Question One: Which were the first civilizations of the 7th Cosmic Plane? You have one-half sektar to respond.”

With that, the music started with what I swore was the Jeopardy! theme countdown.

“Easy,” muttered Tuzren. “The Xygranthids and the Vexthorians.”

I glanced at my Daemon friend. “You know this shit?”

He shrugged. “Onoysians are the information brokers of the Multiverse. I’m surprised they allowed me to enter the contest. Too bad the Umbraeons can’t read the language. Column Two would have been an easier choice.”

“You can read their language?”

“Yeah, it’s standard for Onoys Daemons to learn a minimum of twelve languages. Those of the upper classes know more than thirty. The language there is old Drakvarian. The Chryians really don’t have their own language.” Tuzren scratched a horn thoughtfully.

“How many do you know?” I looked at him curiously.

“Including Human and Elven dialects?”

“Yeah.”

Tuzren shrugged. “I’ve honestly lost count after seven hundred.”

“You know seven hundred languages?” Vetr stared at him.

“Yeah, I do. But as I said, I’ve lost count after that. Might be over a thousand by now.” He shrugged again.

“How do you learn over seven hundred languages?” I asked. I knew Latin, Ancient Greek, Anglo Saxon, German, and some Old Norse. I also knew a smattering of other languages, both spoken and ancient, but I was nowhere as fluent in languages as Tuzren.

“Well, Duolingo is a good start,” Tuzren said.

“You did not learn seven hundred languages from an app,” Vetr said.

“No, but it is a good app.” The Daemon winked at me.

I snorted.

Meantime, the Umbraeons were in a huddle. I couldn’t hear what they were saying over the music and the unseen crowd catcalling them. Apparently, none of the Chryians wanted this team to win. I could see Zee salivating as they talked among themselves.

The music ended and Zee spoke up, wiping the drool from its chin with its hand. “Time’s up! What is your answer?”

One-Eye stepped forward. “The Vexthorians, and…and…the Xygranthids.”

Boos and hisses came from the unseen audience. I glanced at Tuzren, who raised an eyebrow.

“Lucky guess,” Vetr muttered.

“You know, you’re an idiot.” Elryn smacked his shoulder.

“Oww.” The Jotunn glared at her.

“Okay, okay, everyone! Calm down! We have plenty of questions here!” Zee showed his teeth. “Next question: What was the third tidally-locked planet of
