Chapter Eleven

I couldn’t get over the fact that Sam Bailey might be considering me a suspect in Margie’s death. It was ridiculous. Anybody that knew me at all knew there was no way I could do something like that. He didn’t come right out and say I was a suspect, but he didn’t leave much room for doubt, either. The only thing that was going to make me feel better was hopping on down to the Cup and Bean coffee shop and getting a pumpkin spice latte. On the way over, I picked Lucy up so that I had somebody to commiserate with.

“I can’t imagine what Sam is thinking,” Lucy said, crossing her arms in front of herself. She was properly angry about the situation, and that’s what I appreciated about her. She got me. “He should know better than that. To think that you would kill somebody is ridiculous.”

I nodded, and we got out of the car. “Exactly. What is wrong with him? He knows there’s no way I could kill anyone. I might wish somebody dead, but I wouldn’t actually do it.”

She snorted. “Don’t talk like that.”

“I know. I just can’t get over it though. It didn’t help that I sent Margie a text saying I wished she would die.”

Lucy took hold of my arm, stopping in the parking lot. “What?”

I sighed. “At first, I didn’t even remember doing it. We argued about the price I said I would charge her to make a cake for her grand opening, and she said I was being unreasonable. Then she told me I should make her cake for free, and she called me a cheapskate, and I texted her, telling her I wished she would die. Sam acted like it was a big deal, even saying he had other more incriminating texts, but I looked at my phone, and there’s nothing else there.” I sighed again. After I’d looked back over the texts I sent her, everything came back to me. There had been a phone call from Margie where she had said some unkind things about my baking ability and claiming I was price gouging and I was a cheapskate. I had hung up on her, and she texted me, saying that I knew she was right. That was when I said I wished she would die.

“Allie, that was a bad move.”

I nodded. “I know. It was stupid of me, but I lost my temper when she said I should bake her a cake for free because my cakes weren’t that good.”

She shook her head. “That woman was something else.”

“Tell me about it.”

We headed inside the coffee shop and up to the front counter.

“Are you worried about it?” she whispered as I looked up at the menu board.

I turned and looked at her and felt my eyes go wide. Was I worried about it? Yes. But only because Sam didn’t like me. If it had been anybody else besides him conducting the investigation and asking me questions, I wouldn’t have worried about it.
