CHAPTER THIRTY

FAITH TUGGED ON the shimmering green silk Kanon gave her to wear over her nose and mouth. Doc helped her, and Faith puffed out a breath. The face covering sat too tight against her neck and face.

She exhaled, and the material fluttered with her irritation. “Does it have to be this tight?”

Doc nodded. “It has to cover you and not come off. Now put on the dress I made.”

Faith rolled her eyes and stalked into the bathroom. The dress Doc had created turned out to be a shapeless sack, and she held it up wondering which way it even went on. Finally, she found the head opening and slipped into it.

She stepped back out into the main room and scowled at Doc. “It’s miles too big.”

He nodded. “Yes, I expected that. It’s supposed to be big.” He passed her a belt. “Tie this around your waist.”

Faith did as he directed. The material bunched, and she looked up at him in dismay. “Doc…”

He chuckled. “I know Faith, but it’s for your protection. You’re too exotic and lovely to wear your usual clothes, so we must keep you covered if we hope to make it through the market unmolested.”

Faith slumped. “I’ll boil in this.”

Doc shook his head. “No, the markets are run by the Zetikate. They prefer to live in a cold and inhospitable environment, so the market reflects this.”

Karter walked in, looking her up and down. “You’ll be warmer than we will be.” He grinned, and Faith smiled, unable to hold on to her annoyance in the face of his boyish charm. “Well, that’s something at least.”

Karter nodded, still grinning. Faith stared down at her sack dress and was unprepared when Karter pulled her into a hug and squeezed her, smooshing her face to his chest. He released her abruptly, and she peered up at him, startled. Karter just laughed.

Kragon walked into the cabin and stopped when he spotted her. “That’s perfect, Kaedon. All right, if we’re ready. Let’s get this over with.”

Faith looked at him and Karter. They’d adorned their toned bodies with so many kinds of weapons she could barely see the black vests they wore below.

“What exactly are you guys doing for these Arekets?”

Karter looked at Kragon, who shrugged. “We’re retrieving something for them.” He inclined his head. “This will be the last time we take a job of this nature, though. Now that we are mated, it’s not worth the risk.”

Faith bit her lip. She had the terrible urge to beg them not to do it, but she resisted, swallowing down her objections. “Are you sure I won’t be better off on the ship?”

Kanon moved close and raised her chin. “This is the best way, Faith. If someone breaks into the ship and finds you unprotected…” he gave her a tight smile. “Well, it’s best if you’re with us.”

Faith swallowed at his unspoken worry and nodded instead. “Okay. Well, like Kragon said. Let’s get this over with.”

The others nodded, and she accompanied them off the ship gathering her headpiece over her features as she went.
