It was a cold February day in the campus parking lot when fate made the decision for me. After a horrific morning of listening to my English professor wax poetic about love during a lecture on Shakespeare’s sonnets, I finally got out to my car only to discover a flat tire. When it rains…

I was fishing my phone from my purse to call my insurance company when a nearby voice caught my attention.

“Winter, right?” I instantly recognized the deep drawl.

I looked up to find Emmett Parish walking toward me.

“Good memory.” I smirked.

“Flat tire?” he asked, peering around me to look at my car.

“Observant,” I mocked a little. “Not just another pretty face?”

“Emmett,” he offered as though I could forget. “We met at the fundraiser the other night.”

“I remember,” I replied. This seemed to please him, as a roguish grin spread across his face.

Despite my protests that I was perfectly capable of handling the situation, Emmett made quick work of changing my tire. He didn’t even break a sweat. Then again it was cold outside. He smiled and chatted the whole time he worked, seeming all too happy he’d stumbled upon me in need of assistance. Something told me he enjoyed playing the white knight, and I’d temporarily been cast as a bit of a damsel in distress. Eager to abandon that role, I thanked him and prepared to get into my car.

It took him a few seconds to respond. “You’re welcome. Actually can I buy you a cup of coffee?”

“You’re the one who fixed my car.” I smiled up at him. “Shouldn’t I be buying you coffee.”

He inclined his head with a bashful expression, and we headed for the campus Starbucks, which was quite a ways away. The conversation flowed and, except for the moments spent ordering, we talked the entire time. I learned that he was a point guard and captain of the basketball team, though I had no idea what either of those things entailed, and he was kind enough to not bore me with the details. A psychology major with a minor in education, he was excited about getting his Master’s degree and becoming a school counselor. He laughed with genuine amusement as he told me how everyone thought he was crazy for passing up a chance to play in the NBA to work with snot-nosed kids.

“I’m good at basketball, and it’s opened a lot of doors, but working with kids is my passion,” he said with sincerity. The guy really was a do-gooder.

“Everyone has a calling,” was my only reply. He looked over at me for a moment then, his expression curious. He then wanted to know all about Winter. I gave him all the standard answers, but he was content with none of them. He wanted to know more. Not just the who, what, when, and where. He was trying to learn the why’s and how’s. His questions were probing and personal. He didn’t just want to know my favorite color or food, but what I loved about my life and the things I would change.
