CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO
Jadyn had found the previous day a little frustrating. It was all very well following procedure, but sometimes he thought the best thing to do was ignore it. After what had been discovered by Harryâs girlfriend, Grace, on Tuesday night, heâd been itching to get involved with the investigation, but Harry had insisted, and Gordy had made it more than clear on the bossâs behalf, that he wasnât on duty and coming in had not been an option.
He'd spent the day mooching around his flat over in Catterick, either dozing on the sofa, listening to random selections from his vinyl collectionâthe day had been all about Earth, Wind and Fire, for some reasonâor eating. Not a bad day, all in all, but heâd have rather been out doing something useful. Heâd been to the gym, so that was something, wasnât it? Keeping that regular wasnât easy, but so far, heâd managed pretty well with it. And now he was sitting next to Detective Inspector Haig as she sped them along through Wensleydale, their destination a car wash.
Jadyn looked again at the business card for where they were heading.
âCatchy name,â he said.
âNot half as bad as the one for the scrapyard Matt and Jen visited yesterday,â Gordy said. âWell done on making that connection, by the way.â
âHow do you mean?â
âThis was your idea, remember? You made the link between the victimâs hands and washing cars.â
Jadyn couldnât help but smile at this, smugly, too.
âCould still be that they worked in a kitchen, though,â he said, attempting a little bit of modesty, but not too much.
âIt could,â said Gordy. âBut this feels right, donât you think?â
âDo you?â
âVery much so, actually. That was some sharp thinking, if you ask me. We couldâve found ourselves traipsing around every restaurant, hotel, and café in the area if it wasnât for you speaking up.â
âI sometimes think Harryâs view is that I speak up too much.â
âDonât be daft,â said Gordy, a laugh in her voice. âYouâre keen. He likes that. And so do I, as it happens. So, donât you go losing that.â
Neither spoke for the next few minutes, and Jadyn spent the time trying not to yawn. But it was no good and one escaped a little too loudly.
âSorry about that,â he said.
âDidnât rest much yesterday, then?â
âI did. Well, I tried,â Jadyn said. âGuess I was just thinking about what everyone else was doing.â
âTheir job, like you are now, thatâs all. And being off duty to rest is as important as it is being on duty. Never forget that.â
âI wonât.â
âGood.â
The journey continued in relative silence, the only sound that of the wind hissing in through the vents. Jadyn knew the route well, as it was one he took most days, travelling over to Wensleydale to work. And even though it was a lovely drive, he was beginning to wonder if he should move a little closer. Catterick was all very well, but he was really getting to know the team now, having joined around a year ago.
