Chapter Fourteen

Exhaustion made her limbs feel heavy, but there was no chance of sleep tonight. Lina sat on her bed, her eyes trained on the sole window in her room. She’d put on her britches earlier and paired it with a dark tunic top she’d borrowed from Pigeon. It was tucked in tight so that it didn’t billow around her. A borrowed black cloak sat beside her, ready to be donned at a moment’s notice.

When she’d limped into the mess hall later, Pigeon was there waiting for her. She’d fussed over her, fetching her dinner and insisting she eat to replenish her strength. Lina felt defeated, confined to a life of punishment for sins she couldn’t remember, but some time spent with her friend helped to dispel some of the dark clouds around her.

Lina had filled her in on what happened with the Eye, then told her how Torva had banished Braken from the Academy. “Who is the Eater of Worlds?” Pigeon asked, her brow furrowed. “He sounds like a goat we had on the farm when I was younger. Eventually, he ate too many nettles, and his stomach burst.”

Lina moved past the cautionary tale to reveal that she had no clue who the Hellspawn was talking about, then filled her in on what she’d seen during the Kingsday feast. “I think the Eater of Worlds is the one who crashed the king’s party.”

Pigeon was taken aback by this news. “No wonder Torva is going at you with such intensity. If the king is in danger, then it’s all of our duties to protect him.”

“My only duty is to discover my role in all of this,” Lina muttered. “King Lyr is powerful enough to take care of himself. I’m the one being put through the wringer every day in his name.”

Pigeon had patted her on the back gently. “I can’t imagine how hard this must be for you.”

“Not for much longer. Braken said we would visit Linetta Cimmera tonight,” she said, low enough that her nearby guards couldn’t overhear.

“But Torva said he isn’t allowed back into the Academy,” Pigeon countered. “How is he going to get you out when he can’t even get in himself?”

Lina hadn’t had an answer ready. “I don’t know, but it’s the only hope I have, so I’m going to cling to it.”

“If you’re going to try to sneak out, you’ll need to wear something dark,” Pigeon pointed out. That was how she’d ended up with the dark clothing and advice on how not to be seen. Her plump friend seemed to pride herself on her stealth, and Lina was happy for any pointers that would lead to her escaping her prison.

Hours passed, and Lina sat, waiting, hoping for Braken to arrive. She’d expected him to create some sort of diversion to sneak her out the door, but that would mean he’d have to find a way to enter the Academy without being caught. So when her window opened suddenly from outside, she had to slap a hand over her mouth to muffle a scream.
