Eleven:

Talia took several hours to completely treat Olaf’s back. He looked extremely sullen to be left in a cave laying next to the grizzled former apex. His masculine pride appeared deeply sundered by his injuries. As much as he was grateful for the luck spell, he also appeared no more chuffed to accept a leprechaun spell as possible thanks for his continued use of his legs.

“Just don’t do anything I wouldn’t.”

Olaf said, smirking up at me weary from the toll of his injuries. I grinned and snorted.

“What precisely wouldn’t ye do? I’ve got a long memory. “

He grinned lazily and murmured, “What indeed?”

Vaguely teasing me, I rolled my eyes and leaned down, ruffling her hair slightly.

“Be a good lad fer the apex. I don’t want to have to come back to find yer corpse. As much as you piss me off, I’d still miss ye.”

I told him in a soft tone. Olaf chuckled and winced in pain.

“Mavis, be careful. If that was the guard dog of the kingdom. It stands to reason the worst of the foes are ahead of you. No one knows just how powerful the Iron King is. He’s shrouded himself in mystery for ages.”

Olaf implored me, and I nodded.

“I’ll be careful, you know me.”

I grinned, and he met my knowing eyes with his eyes.

“Aye, I do, and ye bloody terrify me.”

The elicited another snort of me, and I rubbed his head for a moment longer.

“Do me a favor, and don’t murder my best mate. He’s a right proper wanker, but he’s, my wanker.”

Wildriver stared into my eyes with his unflinching resolve. His eyes spoke of unfathomable secrets of dark things dancing in the wilderness. He was a constant reminder of the predators prowling the black of night.

“He’ll return to ye when you need him most. Of that I am certain.”

Wildriver hedged mysteriously, causing me to furrow deeply riddling out his possible meaning. I’d nearly forgotten how much future he had dreamed before he lost his foresight. From the wording of his prior conversations, he still seemed to know a lot more than he was sharing with me—as per usual.

To call Wildriver perplexing, would be a cosmic understatement to the fecker’s level of vexation.

“Right, and how many lasses will I bed before I die?”

I asked him, and he just blinked at me. However, Wildriver completely ignored the question.

“Be safe young blood goddess.”

He said to me in parting and extended his arm, and we clasped our arms in a final parting act of respect. I love his granddaughter with all my soul, and part of my heart felt fragmented knowing the old wolf was not long for this life. Even if I still didn’t see the big picture of the how and why.

“Just be leery of the leprechaun.”

Olaf yelled into the cave, as we began to move off to the north. Edenshire gave one final roll of his eyes and a chastening look in Olaf’s direction as we parted company. My mind pondered how many more eye-rolls seemed to transpire now that we had a bit of a smart-arse leprechaun traveling with us.
