And that afternoon, even though I assured her that she didn’t need to come inside and that she was free to wait in the car, Adie stood right beside me at the lab while a hurried nurse stabbed me harder than necessary and took vial after vial of my blood.

Adie somehow seemed to know how I felt about this place, and about medical procedures in general, because she kept me talking the whole time while the nurse silently worked. Asking questions about Ace and the farm and keeping me occupied so I didn’t dwell on how scared I was to be there.

“Your doctor will call you when the results come in. Have a good day,” the nurse said brusquely, slapping a band-aid over the tiny, oozing hole in my arm.

“Come on,” Adie said, grabbing my other hand, “let’s get out of here.”

We were out the door before I knew it and headed for the beach. I didn’t have time to think about all the underlying feelings of fear and despair that that short appointment had brought up. The salty wind buffeted my hair around my face and the bark of sealions filled the air.

“Ooh, look at the ocean. And there’s a donut shop,” Adie called back to me. Her hair flew wildly in all directions. “Come on, let’s get some dessert. My treat today.”

Her smile was contagious, and I found myself following after her, squinting my eyes against the reflection of the sun off the sea. I realized then that Adie wasn’t just someone for me to babysit. If I let her, she could be a real friend.
