The first step to bringing our touch to the emotional layer of the face is to start bringing more awareness to the face-emotion connection while we practice self-massage. We donât just massage the face; we massage the mind through the face. By increasing our mindfulness, we can begin to feel not only the physical anatomy of the face but also the mental-emotional anatomy. Very often this reveals that we are holding on to so much tension in our face!
Even though the face has such a high density of nerve tissue, itâs often the case that weâre dissociated and disconnected from how our face actually feels. Usually itâs only through touch that we realize how much tension we are holding. When people explore meditation, this is a common finding: that the face carries hidden tension, the release of which opens up more peaceful and spacious states of mind.
The previous four self-massage sequences can be revisited with this change of mind, and you will feel a subtle but noticeably different effect afterward. The deeper we engage the mind-body dynamic, the more important our intention becomes. Our intention should not simply be to clear away and release emotion but to remain present and equanimous in the face of emotional arousal. Itâs this presence of mind and the power of equanimity that unravels and dissolves emotional patterns. In practice, this translates to the quality of touch. When our touch is slow and light, it helps support a stronger mind-body connection.
Often, we canât feel the emotional tension in our face because we dislike our emotional patterns, and because of this aversion we often dissociate and become numb to what is there. If our touch is too quick and strong it can pass right through these layers of numbness. Rather than trying to force the tension out of our face, the more effective mind-set is to enfold our experience within a neutral awareness. If we can maintain equanimity or even generate kindness and self-compassion, we can gradually re-pattern our expressions. With time, our internal, emotional landscape will become more beautiful, and concordantly the complexion of our face will also grow into a more beautiful appearance.
The following sequences offer a deeper exploration into the emotional layers of our face. There are three basic techniques explored here: holding, point pressing, and tapping. Each creates a slightly different feeling, but if we keep our intent and quality of awareness grounded and neutral, then each technique can create change in our emotional patterning.
